Men tend to be visual creatures. They tend to make more direct eye contact esp with women. Him looking at you and smiling means he is showing interest in you. If you are interested in him, respond similar.
If you are very interested in him, and you have good rapport (conversation is on a positive roll) you can occasionally gently push your open hand on his shoulder or arm for a couple seconds. This sends a powerful nonverbal message that you might want to become closer to him at some point. It does NOT mean that anyone is going to have sex. The gesture shows increased interest.
Best to do this in conversation when he made you laugh. While laughing, you lean in and make the gesture, and then gradually pull back and still responding to his humor. The gesture should be very passive.

...maybe that he likes talking to you or that you have really pretty eyes and attractive. Or he is just a player and playing his game right...got you doubting...hard to tell I had to be there...lol...
