Not like the ones on tv with sail boats. but are there pirates that rob ships when they are out in the middle of the ocean? I would think that if a boat is out in the middle of the ocean, someone could rob it and get away before anyone could help the people getting robbed.

Yes piracy is still a big problem today. Most of the pirate attacks that happen are in 2 main areas. The Malacca strights south of Singapore and along the cost of east Africa. Sometimes around the central/south American areas as well but not nearly as much. The biggest problem is not that they rob the ship but that they steal the whole ship and kill or sometimes ramson the crew. These attacks usually happen closer to the coast and not out in the middle of the ocean.

Arrr! Excellent question, matey, and I be seein' why ye asked it in the Religion & Spirituality section. Those who don't understand why, simply haven't heard the Word of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

There are false pirates today that are nothing like the real pirates of old. Real pirates, the kind with hooks and eyepatches and parrots, are divine beings, and the original Pastafarians. Sadly, there aren't many of these original pirates left, creating massive problems for the planet. To save the Earth, you need to become a pirate in the name of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. RAmen!

A sail boat could hardly catch an ocean liner. There are pirates. Most of them are drug runners. Some few who confine their robberies to yachts. Hisszzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yes and it's a real problem for navigation in some regions of the world. Indonesia, Somalia, Columbia are some of the places where piracy is a real threat.

There is also a corelation between global warming and the declining number of pirates but I am not certain that this is what you are interested in.
You can check http://www.venganza.org for a discussion on that specific aspect of pirates.

Yes. It is a huge problem around Australia and the Asian countries.
They rob and even steal ships. The Chinese seem to be well organised into modern piracy.

I saw a thing on Discovery Channel not too long ago showing a huge cargo ship under attack. Maritime law says the cargo ship couldn't carry firearms so they used water cannons and hoses to ward off the would be thieves.
