What does 'Region 1 DVD' mean?

I want to buy a DVD but it says it only plays on Region 1 DVD

the world is in regions so a dvd 1 means it is american or canadian and will only play in a dvd player from those countries OR a region free player.

Region 1 means this DVD is for the US and Canada. You cannot play for example on a Region 2 DVD player in Europe.

REGION 8 -- Resevered for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

Of course if you have a Multi Region Dvd disc player it will play

from what i remember your dvds and dvd players have certian codecs and only allow dvd made from the U.S like if you buy a dvd in china you can't play it unless your dvd player plays that region some dvds play muti region dvds check your dvd manual it should tell you the diffrent regions it plays
