I had about 35 hours much more than necessary, but the instructor insisted. I passed first time easiest test i ever took.
If you fail first time, your not really ready.
But its harder to drive in the UK with manuals and all, and a much stricter test.

I personally had 19 lessons then passed first time, i should have only had 12 but the examiner i was due to have was involved in an accident and my test was postponed.
An Instructor i knew told me that the general rule of thumb is one for every year of your life, although i disproved this rule as i was 34 years old. My lessons were one hour long by the way.

When I enrolled with BSM they suggested about 40 hours. I did about 30 I think, my impatience cost me my first practical test. Took a break for a month and did a couple of lessons before the second test, which I passed. So about 30 hours worth. I'm 29, so have to agree with 1 hour for each yr of your age theory. :)

I had about 40 before I took my first test and I failed it!! Had a break of about 18 months then had about 30 lessons but extra driving with my boyfriend at night. Passed second time. It depends how confident you are, I was a really nervous learner but am a really confident driver now.
I think about 40 lessons in all is about average for most people.

I had 10 hours at £1.00 per lesson,
then many happy hours driving with my mates as experienced driver (no age limit then, they were probably 18) hundreds of miles, passed second time! by the way, a test cost £1.00 also. GRIN!

I believe I had either 2 sessions of 3 hours each or 3 sessions of two hours each...either way it totalled 6 hours as far as I remember. This was about 4 years ago in NJ.
