Yes. Jellyfish stings can be quite painful and the pain will last as long as the stinging chemicals are still there on your skin. Usually your skin will present with redness and swelling in and around the region of the stinging.
Jellyfish sting with their tentacles so if you do spot one floating around, try to stay far from it or get out of the water altogether. Sometimes the tentacles can extend very far away from the main body of the jellyfish. Furthermore, some species of jellyfish can give fatal stings such as the Portugese Man of War, which require immediate medical attention if one if ever stung by it.
Vinegar works best as an emergency first aid to combat the chemicals in the sting by neutralising the acidic nature of the sting. But it's best to always consult a doctor as soon as possible because some people may be allergic to the sting and that can be fatal.

I am a diver and they say urine and/or vinegar works for jellyfish stings. I will leave it up to you to figure out how to "package" these items when you go to the beach...just in case you get stung. Also I think jelly fish are bad around August at, say, VA beach so I would find out when they are the worst in the area you are planning on going. If it is, what we call "jelly fish season", well.....swim at your own risk but I have seen so many in a given area it is impossible not to touch one. And, be careful when they show up on the beach. Just because they are on the beach does not mean they are dead and harmless. You also might want to check out man-o-wars and brush up on the potency of the stings. Some can be down right lethal.

If there are jellyfish around at the beach, it is not the right time for swimmers to be around as they have pretty bad stings. Usually some beaches put up signs warning about jellyfish being around.

If you swim at a beach in Australia, you've got a pretty good chance of getting stung. Especially in the north-east around Townsville, Queensland. They have to wear full body-suits up there to swim.
And yes, it hurts, BAD!! You can buy some 'sting-goes' that helps, or take some vinegar with you to the beach just in case.

It depends on which beach you go to. I have had a lot of problems with stings on the west coast of the US, but not as badly on the east coast. I have never had a problem in the Gulf of Mexico.
