India is the name coined by Britishers when they ruled this country. This was derived from Hindu which word had its origin from Sindhu a river on the western frontiers that should be crossed before entering into the Continent. Britishers named the civilisation that was existing at that time in and around the river as Indus civilisation.
In fact this continents original name was "BHARATA VARSHA" or "BHARATA KHANDA" named after the first ruler Bharata. Even though he was a monarch, ruled the country on highest democratic principles.

The word ind is derieved from indus (called by Britishers as Indus Vally Civilization) existed centuaries ago around the river Sindh, now in Pakisthan. In several parts particularly in North, sindh is called as ind keeping 's' silent and the term was adopted by the Britishers. Similarly, the term 'hind' too came from sind.
