Lets say theres a party goin on with lots of drinks....one girl has too much to drink and runs to the bathroom to make her bladder gladder and neglects to turn the lock another person is in the same predicament and accidently walks in on her....My question is who is at fault? Person who neglected to utilize the lock? Or person who neglected to knock?
Keep in mind in this scenario the lock worked fine

I've been to parties in the US (lived there for five years) and in Europe (my home for the other 33 years of my life) and I've NEVER even HEARD of knocking on a restroom door unless you KNOW the lock is broken??? Or when the lock shows red for a veeeeeery long time and you really need to go bad. :) Is that really custom or etiquette? Sheez, learn something new every day here...
Edited to add... As I said, I lived in the US for five years... never had anyone knock there either! I can't remember if there was a red/green signal but we just felt if the door was closed... in college, with the families I lived with during the holidays and afterwards, and every single home I've visited. Still surprised :)

Well, it was partially the person who forgot to lock the door, both because she could have locked it while sitting down, or closed the door when the second person opened it.
Then again, the person opening the door ought have looked a bit closer, and went in a bit more carefully, even if she had to go.
After all, she could have waited a little less time to go.
So, really, I can't answer that, but there are reasons on both sides that you could weigh.

we've been locking bathroom doors since we were about 4 years old. She should not be complaining at all. It is all her fault. Yes its nice to knock, but If she was relying on hearing a knock she was sober enough to lock the door. Modify, you said, none were drunk. She was lacking in good sense.

Well, both. If the girl is at a party where there is drinking...duh other people are going to need to use it too. If she was too wasted to check the lock that is her bad. But, I find it a whole lot easier to knock every time just in case.

I believe that the person that goes into the bathroom should lock the door, if she doesn't want to show the world her "private parts".
Just out of curiosity, did the person who walked in see anything worth fighting for?

The one not using the lock is most. The 2nd person should have knocked however.

ur supposed to knock if a door's closed.
thats not only common courtesy but common sense.
especially a bathroom door at a party.
u lock the door in clubs, not private residences.
the only people that lock doors in private residences are the ones who, themselves, dont knock when a door is closed.
i guess its the way we were raised.

We are supposed to knock before entereing. We are responsible for locking the door. Drunks are irresponsible.
