Swimming will help and the boyancy will relieve some of the need of a support. Check with the local YMCA. or county auth about pool use for medical reason, often there are groups.

If you physical challenge is not being able to move your legs, you can always do some kind of upper body exericises. If it's because you are a heavy person, just taking a walk for 20-30 minutes is good. Also changing your lifesyle of what you eat and how much is always a plus. I think most people need something to do, otherwise they get bored and eat or become less active. So find ways to occupy free time you have by, maybe volunteering with a group, there are many places to volunteer.

You need to see your doctor first then he should refer you to a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist. The amount (Length and reps) and type of exercise you are able to do will be dictated by what the professionals you see will deem as suitable for you. They are able to take into account what injuries, if any you have or the cause of your inability to be ambulant
I had a motor bike crash in 81. 3/12 coma (L) Hemiplegia etc etc and I found that the more or harder I worked at my rehab, the better I got. I can't speak for you, but that worked for me.
Remember 2 rules Rule 1 your Physio is always right and when she is wrong, refer back to rule 1.

Go for it pal. Remember, Effort in = Reward out (Johnno 81)

I think you should do yoga as yoga has no side effects and instead improves the state of injuries.
It also improves your mental state of mind making u feel lighter and refreshed. I think you need mental positive thinking so that you get encouraged and motivated to move on.
You can also try pilates.
