Hi :)

I posted this question in both the immigration and the military forum because my question is kinda part of both categories.
My name is Drew and I came the United States when I was 6 years old. I grew up in US and I joined the U.S. Marine Corps when i was 18 years old. I have been a permanent resident for a 14 years, and I've been a Marine for 2 of them. Until recently I never bothered to become an official citizen because it wasn't a priority. Now I think I would like to become one, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I was planning to talk with my CO but it's currently 0200 where I am. I tried reading up on the USCIS website, but I don't really know how to find the information I'm looking for. I was told that since I'm a member of the U.S. military my process to become a citizen will take less time. Is this true? Anyways, Any information somebody could provide me would greatly be appreciated

Thx

I'm Army and did it in less then 4 months. Go to your personnel office. It is free... They are familiar with it. You are going to fill out the regular N400 and then they are going to fax it somewhere in GA. They will do the background check etc. If you were a regular civilian then, you would fill it out and then send it straight to DHS. But you are not so the military is going to help you with the bckground, which is the time consumer. Once it comes back in less then two months, then you send the whole thing to DHS then you get your fingerprints done, wait for the interview and then the ceremony. Make sure you have a permanent address Marine!!!

Ok, I did some research, you can gain more information by going to the link below.

http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.

They have a special section on Naturalization Information for Military Personnel.

Every military installation should have a designated point-of-contact to handle your application and certify your Request for Certification of Military or Naval Service (N-426). You should inquire through your chain of command to find out who this person is, so they can help you with your application packet.

Good Luck.

yes, it does take less time. PLUS if you wish to reinlist, you MUST become a Citizen in any event.

make an appointment with JAG. they can steer you in the right direction.
