hand held mobile speed cameras?

i was driving up the motor just over a week ago and a van in front of me braked and as i looked up i saw a copper on a bridge just in front of me, i was doing about 60 in a 50 but would it have got the van in front off me first.

If the van was directly in front of you and you were quite close to the van, then they would not have got you because they wouldn't have been able to see your number plate. If you didn't slow down or brake then they could have still got your back number plate. I was told that if you brake and brake again, the radar signal that bounces off your car would be in inconsistant and so they would have to send it again by that time your speed would have been down to 50. They normally allow a 10% margin, so just the fact that the driver in front braking was probably enough to slow you down. Hope this helps.

Was it a police van on the bridge? It might have been an ANPR van (automated number plate recognition). They have a computer on board with a list of number plates for cars that are suspected of having no tax, no insurance, been stolen etc.

There was probably a patrol car parked nearby ready to stop any cars picked up by the machine in the van.

depends on the department they have speed cameras that use spread radar which is more common on a dash mounted unit v.s hand held, D.C. is infamous for them. on the other side of things their is the Lazar radar, and they can be equipped with cameras, which can only be hand held, reason is you have to target a particular car. you canto just shot in to a pack because of its design. so for some reason the cop had the spread radar than the van blocked your speed, if he had Lazar than your busted

probably
