three people get a hotel room for 30 dollars. they each pay 10 bucks for the room. the bell hop realizes the room was only 25 dollars. he gives the other bell hop 5 dollars to take up to the three people. on the way to the room he puts two of the five dollars in his pocket for himself.
when he gets to the room he tell the people, the room was a little cheaper here is three dollars back. so if each person gets a dollar back then they each really only paid 9 dollars each for the room. so $9 x 3= $27. the bell hop only put 2 dollars in his pocket. so
$27+$2 = $29. WHERE IS THE LAST DOLLAR?

The numbers in the problem are written to intentionally mislead a person. There is no missing dollar.

The men paid $25 for the room, received $3 back ($28 so far) and the bell hop kept $2 (totalling $30.)

They did pay $9 each or $27 ($25 +$2 that the bell hop kept) but they received the remaining $3 back from the $30.

$30 - $3 (refund) = $27 (the room $25, and the bell-hop $2.)

Hope that explaination is easier to understand.

Adding $27 and $2 doesn't make sense in the first place - they shouldn't be expected to sum to $30. Rather, $9 x 3 = $27, they only owed $25, so the extra $2 is in the bell hop's pocket.

the mathmatics is all off on that. they paid 30 but it was only 25. thus 5 dollars is left out. Why would you then add 27 dollars plus 2? they got a refund of 3 dollars, you'd add the 3, because realistically since they don't know it was only 25, they think they were paying 27. because the bellhop stole 2 dollars. so it'd be 27+3 long story short

They paid 30 first off.....got 5 back..the bellhop took 2 for himself, and gave them each back a dollar. Concentrate on the 5 they got back.
