I would start with the book of John and then read the other 3 gospels(mathew, mark & luke) then read the book of acts and then get into the other books of the New Testament. A good bible(such as the MacCarthur bible will give you a historical outline of each book). Here are some good websites where you can actually listen to bible teaching that will explain what you are reading.

I would suggest John. After that read Luke, Mark and Matthew. You don't need to read Genesis until you have an understanding of the Gospels. Christ tells you what you need to know when he quotes from Genesis quite a few times in the Gospels. I find it incredible that unbelievers would try to tell you what to read in the Bible, seeing as they have never read it themselves, weird.

There are many ways. I think it is best to read from beginning to end the first time.
If that doesn't put you off entirely....
Next time through, start reading the bible in parralel. I mean reading all those duplicate stories from the different books side by side. Notice the differences. How can both be true? Why are there 4 different versions of the 10 commandments, and how come you never heard about that in Sunday School?
Next time try reading it with a concordance of biblical errancy. Don't take the word of the author...look the verses up yourself in context.
another fun way is just by topic. This website has a bible searchable by atrocity, humor, sex, absurdity etc. great fun

Where is that passage about the talking mule?
How many people does God kill in the Old Testament anyway?
all here

Genesis. It's the first book of the Old Testament and a logical place to start. And Genesis is my favorite. It has the creation myth, Cain & Abel, the Tower of Babel, Noah's flood. Exodus is next and it's got some cool stuff like Pharoah & Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. After Exodus the going gets tougher and you may want to skip around a bit.

To realy learn about peace and love I suggest :
(Deuteronomy 20:10-14)
As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you.
This will immediately show you that you can drop the whole thing ang get the last Harry Potter. Much more entertaining.
