To me, I consider someone overweight if they have huge stomachs and if they look kind of square. I consider something obese if their thighs are protruding or if they are extremely round. I do not consider chubby people to be overweight, just extra padding.

Please do not base your answer according to the BMI. The BMI is NOT scientific and has no medical grounding. The BMI is in fact inaccurate the majorty of the time because it does not take into context that people have different body types, and the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. There are three body frames: small, medium, and large. Weight varies depending on your frame. If you base your weigh on a stupid BMI chart, than you are in for a surprise. Some of the "ideal" weights do not fit into certain body frames and may result in an ill look if you are a large frame. Thanks.

Anytime the person is visibly affected by their weight, I think of them as fat. If they're panting, breathing hard, having a hard time on the steps, can't tie their shoes comfortably, can't fit through regular sized aisles, etc.

Also if the person is just chubby but chowing down on fast food or drinking soda, I think of them as fat.

Overweight is kind of subjective, but obese not so much. I mean, you can just tell when someone is obese. But I've taken art history classes in school so I know that the current ideal for very firm, muscular, boney female bodies (with fake, unnaturally large breasts compared to the rest of the body) is a relatively new trend. Believe it or not but in the past people actually prefered women to have some "padding", a lot of people in American culture these days would consider these same women to be overweight or fat. Also, in present times people from other cultures like women who are soft and look like they have fat on them. It shows that they are fertile and healthy enough to have children. Flat hard muscular abs = masculine and unfertile in a lot of old time periods/cultures.

I think your idea of overweight is silly. Overweight and Obese are medical terms. I have big thighs and wide hips, but I'm not overweight.

BMI is probably not the best way to determine whether someone is overweight. However, your waist/hip ratio and body fat percentage are. You can't go around calling people overweight who clearly aren't, because they don't fit your personal standards.

HTH : )

Overweight in scientific and objective language means having to compute for your Body Mass Index(BMI) first.

BMI= kilograms/ht in meters x ht in meters

If your BMI equals----
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

So overweight to me would be a BMI of 25-29.9.

Overweight and Obese, believe it or not, are medical terms. A doctor can take a health history, and examine a patient, and then tell if they are overweight or obese.

People come in a lot of shapes, sizes, colors, etc. and I try not to walk around slapping labels on total strangers.

if you have your own gravitational pull. If you know you cant wear sexy close no more. If you can play pool with the planets. If you take up two seats anywhere. If the doorway have to be greased for you to get in. If you fall and it takes a crane to get you up. If someone taps your body and the fat jiggles for 10 minutes. If you sweat even in winter. Etc.

FYI thick waisted people are probably heading toward diabetes. Most people are unaware of this and think it is natural and bad luck to have such a waist. Beware apples of the world, you don't handle your insulin correctly. Your body tells you to eat even if you aren't hungry and as you get older you will gain more weight and it will go to your stomach. You will have other problems you will attribute to bad luck or bad genes but it is controlable. If you are thick waisted, read and learn what you can do to stop the progression of this disease. If you don't learn what and how to eat, you will get it. I wish someone had told me cause once you are diagnosed, you have just shortened your life five years and it is a nasty disease. And it is progressive-it just keeps coming.

You are overweight if your age don't match the required weight or if your height don't match your weight. I think there's a chart about that.

or you could try looking at your toes while standing straight up. If you can still see your toes, and not your tummy, then you are not overweight! (i just heard that from someone)
