I have a classic car, which predates the law requiring seat belts. I do not wish to fit belts as it makes the car non original. I can legally drive it without belts, but cannot comply with the child seat law. It is very rare that I need to carry such a child so the option of getting a newer second car is not really on

I am trying to clarify a point of law, please no moral nonsense about why I should want to, or that I am irresponsible, thanks

look folks, I haven't carried a child in this car, I don't intend to, but if an emergency arose, it would be nice to know how I stood in law

Children over 3 years of age can be carried in the back seat if no seat belts are fitted.

" My vehicle has no seat belts, or no rear seat belts
If a vehicle has no seat belts (eg a classic car), a child aged 3 years and over may travel in a rear seat unrestrained.

A child under 3 years old may not travel in cars, vans or goods vehicles which do not have seat belts installed. if there are no seat belts fitted in the vehicle, then a child under 3 years old may not travel in it."

I ve started to see some ads about child seating in a car, and they say it's prohibited for a child below 12 years old to sit in the front. But hey, do what is best for you and you child ! Back seat if he's still young!

If your car is classed as a classic car and by law you do have to have seat belts fitted , you cannot be prosecuted for carrying someone for not wearing a seat belt.

You only have to use the restraints if they are fitted. Just like yourself, if there is no belt there how can you be made to wear it?
There's no point in using a booster cushion as there are intended to make an adult seatbelt fit them better.

Oldbeard's got it. Child over 3 okay unrestrained in the back seat. Child under three - no.

I think bandits anser is closest to the truth, but i'd be inclined to ask at your local police station to confirm.

you cannot travel with a child in your car without seatbelts.. it is not safe basically... you might be a safe driver but there are a lot of unsafe drivers out there... if you do ever have to travel with a child i would not use this car you would never forgive yourself if something happened.. i hope this helps

You would rather risk a child's life than ruin a car. I think you need to look at your priorities.

you wouldnt drive with something breakable in your car without securing it, would you? on the rare occasion you are with a child, take a taxi, get a lift, or walk, its not worth the risks
