Ok I am wanting to know what are the best lap dogs. I am talking a dog breed that likes to play with kids but also loves to sit in a persons lap or sit beside them on a couch or sleep with them in a bed and just be spoiled rotten. A breed that has energy but has calm moments as well. Overall easy to train to sit and stay and socializes well.

I am allergic to pugs. I have considered bassethounds (hard to find in this area) and a few mixed breeds. Heard Beagles are hyper and aren't usually very calm. I know most toy breeds aren't good around children so I am looking for inbetween toy up to a medium breed. My son is scared of larger dogs and so isn't my stepdad (who I live with) so I can't get the great dane like I want.

You are talking about several breeds, but the all-time favorite is a mutt. That mutt may have terrier, pomeranian, toy or miniature poodle, pug or even chihuahua somewhere in it's genes. Lap dogs are notoriously good with children as long as the children know the dog is not a toy and needs gentle hands.

Check out the local animal shelter or humane society. If those don't have the lap warmer you are looking for, check on specific breed rescue groups in your area.

No small dog is good with young children. Especially if that child is going to be picking him up and holding him a lot - kids can't help dropping things! I think you are talking about a small dog, right?

I would suggest a Papillon.

Many small dogs are hard to train (housebreak) because they are so small and do not properly develop inside for a while.

The toy Poodle is a very smart dog. I am not sure if it is any easier to housebreak but a little smarter. They are full of energy and need a LOT of grooming!

I have two Boston Terrier females and just love them. They are wonderful companion dogs. They get no more than 25 to 27 pounds and live well in a small space. Shedding is minimal. Like any other pet, they are as good as the owner is about training them, but they are pretty smart. I would not trade my girls for anything.

If you like big dogs...Great Danes are fantastic! They are great with all family members. Loving and full of cuddles! Also very protective and need to be trained properly. If you looking for smaller doggies...I would say a Jack Russell or Lab (a bit bigger but good breed)!
One day I hope to have a Rhodesian Ridgeback which is a very loving and smart dog!

A campanion/lap dog is a chihuahua. You can get an assortment of sizes up to about 7 lbs. The show dogs are under 6 lbs.

If you want a look (we bought two), go to:

well i was going to suggest a Borzoi or an Irish wolfhound but you say your child is afraid of large dogs well then maybe you should get
a Klee Kai which is a miniature Siberian husky everything like a husky except small though they are rather difficult to find.
the website below will take you to a website where they have them

A Pug is a great dog. I also like Shiz Su's. Very cute and loves to be cuddled.

Boxers are wonderful-they can be energetic and play with the kids (they tend to adore kids) but they can also be couch potatoes and climb into your lap on the couch.
