I got a girl labrador from the same pet shop 4 years ago. i had to put her down when she was 2 because she had very servere hip dysplasia and had pra. i thought i would get another pup from the same shop and i thought they would have changed. so this is what my question and problem is...!

i went to the pet shop to look at the puppies they have there (atleast 40) and i saw a cute little boy chihahua for $900 so i bought him because i was looking for a chi pup for atleast 7 months prior to this. he was actually $1500 but they lowered his price because he was 7 weeks old and was to hard to sell now. after signing all the paper, i took him home and took a look at him because they said their vet was unavilable for 3 days on holidays. i found he had a cold, a scab on his left cheek, crust stuff OVER his pen!s and he limped a LITTLE BIT. (this was all yestersay) he has not broken thru the crust on his pen!s, his scab now has gone all black, he is limping a bit more and his cold has ....

cold has got a bit worse. he is sneezing and coughing and is very lethargic now. i know if i take him to my vet it will cost thousands to fix him.

i know i should have picked up on this when i was at the shop but i was so excited about getting my new baby boy i forgot to ask about his health.

the pet shop has a health guarantee on him for 24 hours but it has been about 30 hours since i got him. the pet shop health guarantee only covers things that could have happened to him at the shop and no hereditary dieseases.

im not sure what to do.... can anybody help me?

yes, i have now learnt my lesson never to trust pet shops but i just fell inlove with his sad little eyes behind the glass.

If i get a lawyer and pay for the vet bills, can i get all my money back? any legal help is great.. as well as advice on what to do with him!

He has a major agression problem. he always bites me when i pick him up and he nips my hands when i bend down. he is sometimes scary when he ......

I work in a pet store, and I can not tell you how infurriating it is that 95% of pet stores run their business like this. Here is the legality of it, at least according to Canadian Law: Pets are considered "product", a pet sold with a pre-existing condition and it is not disclosed is the same as a manufacturer's defect in say a TV. The Pet Store is legally obligated to replace or refund the money, unless you signed a contract stating something else regarding refunds. Vacc. certificates are legal documents, you can have them charged with falsifying them, the phoney vet as well. Someone there obviously knows that the business is being run this way, so I wouldn't hold my breath for an apology. Honestly, contact a lawyer, take them to the cleaners. There are some of us out there trying to change the industry and make it safe for consumers, operaters like this only damage a badly damaged industry. I won't even start on the effects on the animals and people. Legally you are entitled to a refund for this case. The only "defense" I can give the pet store, is that they very well could have de-wormed the puppy and either a) didn't give strong enough dose or b) there after brought in more puppies and (with worms) and didn't de-worm your puppy a second time. Either way they're either to ignorant or corrupt to sell animals. NOTE: Just re-read your post, at 6 weeks old it is up and down if the puppy should have had ANY shots at all. Shots before 6 weeks are redundant and can make the dog sick. Either way, its unethical to sell such young pups, unfortunatley, not illegal.

sue the damn place! that's a rip off to sell you a sick puppy for $900! Also 7 weeks is still a week too young for a puppy to be away from its mother puppies aren't ready until 8 weeks
a huge majority of puppies from pet shops come from puppy mills so actually buying the pup from a pet shop is the risk you took but the fact that the pet shop failed to inform you of the pups health and where it came from is their fault of course their not going to come out and just say "oh by the way we got this pup from a puppy mill" but still telling you the vet was unavailable for 3 days if bullshit there's definitely more than 1 vet out there they could have taken it to a different one get your money back so that way you'd have enough to pay for the vet bills and get a dog trainer if your not able to do that then just take the dog to a shelter if you feel you can't handle him anymore. And if you ever decide to get another dog make sure its not from a pet shop and if buying froma breeder make sure the breeder is family oriented
and make sure the person is a professional breeder read the web site down below it may help you decide which breeder is a good breeder and not a bad breeder

I have a hard time believing a 7 week old Chihuahua nipped a dog hard enough to do $150 worth of damage.

Your puppy is a puppy mill pup. They take them away from the litter as soon as they are weaned so they are more salable. They can make more money.

Unfortunately, there are vital aspects of socialization, including bite inhibition, that are missing if a puppy is removed from his litter before a minimum of 8 weeks old.

Get that puppy to the vet, asap.

I would really hope that this story isn't true. Firstly, why would you spend so much money on a pup and then not take it to the vet for desperately needed attention, just because its going to cost you money?

If the pet stores vet is unavailable, then he should still be covered by the health check in my opinion.

I hope you really do learn your lesson, because buying from a pet store does nothing but screw you over, and help fund the puppy mills.

Your pup needs to see the vet as soon as possible.Take him to your vet and see if they will work out some payment plan. One reason he is aggressive is because he is a very sick little dog, very sick!
Pet shops are prone to buy their pups from puppy mills, one of the worst and cruelest of places. They don't care if the animal dies or how attached you've become to your dear pet. They think that replacing the pet will take care of things, if they replace the animal at all.
Anyone buying from a pet shop is promoting puppy mills. I know they are adorable and it is so sad to see them in their cages but as long as people buy them from these pet shops, puppy mills will thrive.

You mentioned that he was 7 wks old and they lowered their price because he was too old to sell. Guess they sell their pups younger than 6 wks? They should be put out of business. Any pet breeder or pet shop who sells puppies/cats before they are 8 wks old should be crucified and I mean that sincerely! They don't get the nurturing or immunization from their mothers like they need and this practice should not go on.
Get your pup to your vet and beg them to work out a plan.
If I were you, I would take my story to the media, call up your t.v. station and see if they will take your story, seriously............many do. The pet shop sold you a sick animal but you love him and need to seek medical attention for him. Puppy mills abuse and inbreed animals all the time and your pup my always be aggressive, if he survives. Or he may be a very lovable dog and is simply aggressive because he is so sick and doesn't want to be messed with.
This pet shop may then want to work on "settling" with you and YOUR VET bill or best yet maybe you will put them out of business.
It sounds to me that he has distemper and if so, it is rare that the pup will survive.
I hope he makes it.......

Never, I mean NEVER buy a puppy from a petstore. They come from PuppyMills and have many health problems and yes they are more likely to become aggressive as they have never had socialization. I didn't even know petstores still were selling dogs, none of the ones around here do. Chances are the dog will have to be put down due to severe aggression. I have known of many puppymill puppies having to be put down because of varies problems including severe aggression. Do research online and there are groups looking for proof of puppymills and stores still working with them so they may be able to help you if not get your money back then atleast they could help fight and get the store to stop selling puppymill puppies. Good luck

Caveat emptor. Buyer beware. Your puppy is aggressive because he was removed from his litter way too young, so he'd be "cute enough" to make more money.

Read this very carefully,
EVERY puppy you buy from a pet store comes from a puppy mill. It might be one of the nicer ones, but it is still a puppy mill. No responsible breeder would let any of their puppies be sold in a retail store. It just won't happen.

Get your puppy to the vet immediately and sue the crap out of the pet store.

Wow, id say you learned the hard way and got scammed!!

OK, first you need to go to a pet store and get him a, plastic ring for his neck. So he will stop biting him self, yes the make them small enough. Second, you need to get him all of is first stag shot NOW.. He needs all of his first round of puppy shots. I'm sorry to say this but, when they said were sorry our vets outta town, that should have been a red flag..

From what you have said here, you have a VERY sick puppy! And he can also make you very very ill as well. He could have parvo, if so. Your in for a long long ride.

And YES, get a lawyer!

Good Luck

Pet shops get dogs from puppy mills and their only concern is money, not animal wellbeing. I don't doubt he was tossed around as a pup, and was in with lots of other pups, some of whom were agressive. You have the task of teaching him trust again. It makes me happy that you got him out of that horrible place, but PLEASE try not to support puppy mills anymore. You need patience with him, and I wish you luck. Give him tons of love and praise and treats. He'll come around.
