According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "It is at once evident that in a Christian sense, everyone who had received a mission from God, or Christ, to man could be called 'Apostle.' In fact, however, it was reserved to those of the disciples who received this title from Christ." So it seems that while the 12 Apostles were disciples, not all disciples are apostles.

I guess I'd say that an apostle is a disciple who's rather advanced in his/her journey of faith, to the point where he/she is able to bring it to others with knowledge and confidence.

A disciple, on the other hand, is a follower who's not as advanced and still has much to learn about the faith.

When the Twelve were with Jesus, they were disciples. Later on, after the Resurrection, when the Holy Spirit came upon the Twelve (minus Judas Iscariot), they were brought into the fullness of religious knowledge. They became apostles.

Jesus chose 12 apostles. They were the main guys that spoke to the teacher Himself. Disciples are the ones the apostles chose for help and all the others who heard the good news and followed Jesus in word and action.

The apostles were those chosen by Christ to be the ones to establish and rule the church that he founded.

All the apostles were clergymen, as they were both priests and bishops.

Disciples were various faithful followers of Christ, male or female, but not necessarily clergy.

The Greek word 'apostolos' is derived from the common verb 'apostello',meaning simply 'sent forth'(or off).
The term is principally applied however, to those disciples that Jesus personally selected as a body of 12 appointed representatives.
The Hebrew word for disciple (limmudh) basically refers to one who learns,is taught, or is trained. The Greek word mathetes(disciple) primarily denotes one who directs his mind to something.
