My cat is a little overweight, she is fluffy. Everytime I brush her, these little hair balls get stuck in her fur and I have to cut them out. Also she has white little flakes in her fur, and she has a little extra ski when i pet her, like under her chin, on her stomach. She is only 4-5. Should I be concerned? She also hasnt had a checkup for years.

I know, I should take her to a vet soon, I AM NOT a bad person, my cat is like attached to me. I just never get a chance to take her to the vet because my dad always has the car.

First of all I would like to say 'congratulations' that you never had a situation yet that you really had to bring your kitty to the vet... it tells me that you do take good care of her. If you cannot feel her ribs when you run your hands gently down her sides, then chances are she is a mite over-weight. If she is then it is time to put her on a diet of scheduled meal times and no free feeding anymore (leaving dry kibble in her bowl for her to nibble at all day). You might consider switching her to wet canned food becuase dry kibble has lots of calories - more so than any wet cat food.

The white flakes on your kitty is probably due to dry skin which some cats get especially in the wnter when heaters are on. This can be addressed by a good diet too - one that is protein rich. Some people feed their kitties 1 beaten raw egg everyday to get the pet's skin and coat in top condition. Egg is a great protein source. Try that and see if it will help.

Oh... you need to brush kitty everyday to prevent those "balls" of fur. Badly matted spots should be gently and CAREFULLY snipped

All pets should have check ups at least once a year if you want your animal to remain healthy. The hairballs you are talking about usually come from long hair and lack of grooming. The flaky skin might be dry skin, lack of vitamins/nutrients. You should take her in. Tell the vet what you feed her and all that you are worried about. Maybe you need to change the diet.

The white stuff you see is dander...normal especially in long-haired varieties.

The fur balls are common in long-haired cats.

Even thinner cats have that extra skin.

Yes, you should take her to the vet.

I would take her to get a checkup. She might be lacking somekind of vitamins and need her food to be changed. When cats get old and overweight they seem to have preblems grooming themselves. My cat is a COW and I am having problems with her right now and she will eat anything I leave laying around. She's like a goat.
