I saw some slo-mo a few years back that showed them doing neither. It flew up to the ceiling, grabbed on with its front legs and then its back end was just pulled/flipped up like an acrobat.

When they take off, they jump backwards. If you are trying to swat them, aim about 4 inches behind them.

Actually, the question should be:when a fly lands on the ceiling does it do a half loop or a half roll? , because the maneuver is not completed. They could do either, but I haven't really worked up enough interest to study flies and their flying behavior.
