Juice fasting is a type of fasting and detox diet in which the practitioner consumes only fruit and vegetable juices. Being available only in digestible carbohydrates, these foods are digested rapidly as the juice digestion process expends only a small amount of energy. People choose to undergo juice fasts for various reasons and via various methods. Juice fasts are often marketed together with supplies, supplements and support groups.
Juice fasts are commonly undergone with the intent of detoxification for greater health, the theory being that less energy is expended on digestion of foods; therefore more energy exists for the rest of the body to expel toxins. As toxins are believed to lie within many of the human body's eliminative glands and organs, different juice fasts target different sections of the body. For instance, a large portion of juice fasters believe that abstaining from solid food allows the body to recover and heal itself from damage and fatigue caused by the relentless stress of digestion. Others choose fasting because they want to target the liver, the kidneys, the urinary tract, the skin, the gallbladder, the brain, the immune system, etc.[1]
Additional reasons for undergoing juice fasts include religous reasons, losing weight and attempting to wean oneself from unhealthy habits, i.e. smoking, drinking soda, overeating, caffeine addiction, etc. Some more serious participants use juice fasting as an alternative to conventional medical practices, i.e. as a healing technique for pain, cancer, depression, arthritis, severe infections that failed antibiotics, autoimmune diseases and many other supposedly incurable diseases.[2]

Fasting can have dramatic weight loss in a short amount of time. From what i know, it is recommended if you plan on doing more than one week of fasting to check with a doctor first. When i first heard of a juice diet, it was my moms friend who went through with it for only one month and lost 80 pounds. And as you probably know, or atleast should. Alot of nutritionist and fitness experts have said that losing too much too soon can be very unhealthy. Theirs also a water fast, which is what jesus did for 40 days. Fasting is also a big spiritual thing. Be sure that you transition into the diet the right way along with many other diets. Alot of diets fail in the end because the person does not transition, or change their routine slowly enough or at all and end up gaining their weight back shortly after they have stopped. There are several really good sites with alot of information about the diet. Also make sure that when you make the juice that you use a juicer, not a blender. A juicer will remove all the pulp. This can be quite important. :)

Any fasting can be harmful. With that said I have fasted for extended periods drinking water, juices, and clear broths. You will lose weight of course. Just keep up the liquid intake, After awhile you don't even want to drink but fluid intake is very important. And don't go crazy. Limit the fast. The second day is often the hardest and it's then that your strength and mental capacity begin to diminish usually. You won't become a bumbling idiot but you can definitely tell. Again, use caution if you choose to fast.
