Well it sounds like he likes you, and maybe considers the possibility of being more than friends. Maybe he says it hoping you'll catch on.
That said, I have a guy friend who calls me "beautiful". He doesn't expect anything from me and is not interested in something more happening. He once did want a romantic relationship, but he gave up on that. Point is...maybe this guy just has you on a pedestal like that--and wants nothing more.
Maybe one night you can just ask him why he calls you beautiful. Don't ask in an annoyed or defensive way, though--and only ask if you are ready to hear an answer you might not want. Work it out beforehand in your head what your response will be if he wants something more than friendship.
