Young folks everywhere are practicing yoga to learn how to relax from everyday stress and pressures, gain personal freedom, and enhance their bodies' flexibility. For a quick breakdown, yoga means "discipline" in Sanskrit, a classical language and writing system of India. Although yoga originated in India thousands of years ago, it is popular now as a way to meditate, stretch and flex, and improve health and well-being.
Yoga increases flexibility, and keeps you generally fit through exercises, stretches, and breathing techniques. Jared, 16, a quarterback for his high school in Atlanta, dispelled the myth that yoga was for wimps. He said, "My coach had us go to the YMCA to take a yoga class so we can increase our flexibility. At first, we wanted to keep it secret, but when we went undefeated this year, I guess it did something right! Now I hear all kinds of teams are doing yoga. I think we were the first, though."
Yoga may help boost your immune system. It helps you relax, relieve stress, and maybe even reach "natural bliss." Matt, 13, is a firm believer in the stress-reducing potential of yoga. He says, "My mom was having a really hard time dealing with her recent divorce from my dad. She's a lot calmer and takes life a lot easier after she took up yoga. Her whole lifestyle has changed for the better and she's overall a nicer person. I owe yoga!"
Yoga encourages mental strengthening through patience, concentration, and dedication. Angela, 17, uses yoga for her studies and recently got some good news from the college she's attending in the fall. "I found out the college I am about to attend has yoga class. I am definitely taking it. I believe that yoga really helped me with my SATs, so I know I am going to stick with it in college."
Steph, 17, says, "I practice yoga all the time. I hear about how there are lots of spiritual levels and stuff, but I haven't gotten there yet. I think that if I keep practicing yoga, it will have a huge impact on the way I think and live. Being a guru, though? I dunno."
Actually, for people like Steph, yoga has been modified throughout the years, especially in the U.S. Classes are held all over the world that mostly concentrate on the simple methods of stretching, breathing, and exercise routines.
Eighteen-year-old New Yorker Sakai has been practicing yoga for the past four years. She said, "I used to be the youngest in the class at 14, but now I see lots of teens doing it. I live in New York where things are so hectic, so at least once a week I need yoga in my life. It's real exercise because it helps me get stronger and helps my breathing and flexibility. You use muscles you never knew you had. I don't know what my life would be like without yoga!"
All in all, after hearing about all the benefits yoga can provide, you might want to consider giving it a try. No one is too young to reach "natural bliss"!

Stress- yoga is def a stress reducer no matter what kind of yoga you do or at what level. yoga isn't solely about the movement, but also about breathing, relaxation , and meditation.
Flexibility - even the stiffest person in the world becomes more agile and flexible from yoga.
Strength and Toning- when you have to hold poses and push your body to newer poses you gain strength. A perfect example of a great position is plank ( its like pushup position, body straight, butt at good level- does not sink down, and abs tighten) even such a move strengthens your core muscles. No position in yoga should be so easy that you can't feel your muscles being activated. It means that your not doing it right or that you should move on to an advance move, and there's always a harder way to do even a simple yoga move.
You simply feel healthier, better, and if you do yoga correctly, your body should feel the effects of it even after a session.

yoga is extremely effective in:
Increasing Flexibility – yoga has positions that act upon the various joints of the body including those joints that are never really on the ‘radar screen’ let alone exercised.
Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons – likewise, the well-researched yoga positions exercise the different tendons and ligaments of the body.
Surprisingly it has been found that the body which may have been quite rigid starts experiencing a remarkable flexibility in even those parts which have not been consciously work upon. Why? It is here that the remarkable research behind yoga positions proves its mettle. Seemingly unrelated “non strenuous” yoga positions act upon certain parts of the body in an interrelated manner. When done together, they work in harmony to create a situation where flexibility is attained relatively easily.
Massaging of ALL Organs of the Body – Yoga is perhaps the only form of activity which massages all the internal glands and organs of the body in a thorough manner, including those – such as the prostate - that hardly get externally stimulated during our entire lifetime. Yoga acts in a wholesome manner on the various body parts. This stimulation and massage of the organs in turn benefits us by keeping away disease and providing a forewarning at the first possible instance of a likely onset of disease or disorder.
One of the far-reaching benefits of yoga is the uncanny sense of awareness that it develops in the practitioner of an impending health disorder or infection. This in turn enables the person to take pre-emptive corrective action
Complete Detoxification – By gently stretching muscles and joints as well as massaging the various organs, yoga ensures the optimum blood supply to various parts of the body. This helps in the flushing out of toxins from every nook and cranny as well as providing nourishment up to the last point. This leads to benefits such as delayed ageing, energy and a remarkable zest for life.
Excellent toning of the muscles – Muscles that have become flaccid, weak or slothy are stimulated repeatedly to shed excess flab and flaccidity.

There are many different ideas related to Yoga, where it comes from, what it is all about, and how to practice a range of techniques.Generally, it is recognised as an ancient system of philosophies, principles and practices derived from the Vedic tradition of India and the Himalayas, more than 2500 years ago. It is a system that recognises the multi-dimensional nature of the human person, and primarily relates to the nature and workings of the mind, based on experiential practice and self-enquiry.In Yoga, the body, breath and mind are seen as a union of these multi-dimensional aspects of each and every human being. The system and various techniques of Yoga cultivate the experience of that union, leading to greater integration of being, internal peacefulness, and clarity of the mind. It is a system that is designed to cultivate health and happiness, and a greater sense of self-awareness and higher consciousness.

Flexibility, body control, mental concentration & some strength gains (to those who initially had very little). Like pilattes, yoga is better than a kick in the nuts and good for people who eat healthy and have no problems maintaining their current weight. For those with time constraints and are over weight, it is an inefficient use of your time to really burn calories & strengthen muscle (more muscle equals higher metabolism).
