God should have destroyed Adam and Eve when they first chose to walk away from him and seperate from him. Sin IS separation from God. He had to give them a choice, because love without a choice is not love. He did not force them to do anything after that, just like he does not force you. If you are god of your own existence then you will be left with nothing but what your own choices create. Everything "good" came from God, what is existence when everything "good" is taken out and nothing but the things that come from separation from God are left? Hell. God will let you have that if you want, he just does not offer all the good things that he gives you now forever. Yes our world is extremely infected by all the bad choices people have made by following their own ways rather than Gods, God gives us the choice to screw up his creation too. But that doesn't mean that the incredible beauty of his creativity is not written on nature, you, and that you have that truth written on your heart. Even if you have covered it up with all the polution of bad choices.

I couldn't follow this God either.
For me it is more of a question of morals and ethics.
Could I honestly abid being around a God that would use torture as the only form of punishment. Torutre that is eternal!
To me it doesn't matter how evil the person was for 100 years at the most I can not see where torture forever is anything but sadism for sadism sake!
Reason being even the dumbest of dumbies learns sooner or later. To punish someone beyond the point in which they learned that what they did was wrong it ceases to be punishment and becomes just pure sadism! And torture is NEVER a punishment for anything! Torture proves nothing and accomplishes even less!

It's not just obeying this being. It's giving over every thought and breath you have to glorify him, both now and in the afterlife. Depending on what sect you believe, good works might not even count, so you could screw over half the human race and that might even HELP your cause.
I was watching a special about Sodom and Gomorrah just this morning and I sat there flabbergasted that people believe this story could possibly have happened. God DESTROYED entire villages because the people were out of control. He was even happy with Lot for offering his two virgin daughters to the unruly crowed to pacify them. He killed Lot's wife for just turning around to look at the town being destroyed (by fire and brimstone, no less). And when he and his daughters found a cave, thinking they were the only people left on earth, this pious man's daughters got him drunk and raped him in order to conceive his children to further the race. That is the story as told by the show "History's Mysteries." "History"??? I thought "history" should include some facts... some iota of truth. Anyway, this is the God the religious folks want us to believe is benevolent and kind????
Nope. I'll gladly burn in hell. I don't believe in God, not now and certainly not later. But if he did prove himself to exist and even "forgave" me for not believing, I'd give him what for about how he treats his "children" and then I'd gratefully walk straight down to hell to burn for eternity.
(Did you hear that noise? That was my mother crying... I'm sorry Mom... I just can't do it.)

There's a difference between accepting the belief that Deity exists and accepting the belief that Deity exists and is childish enough to demand that you bend your will to Its every wish.
I don't think we honor the gods all that much when we're grovelling.
That's me.

The only thing that would make me "accept" would be proof that God exists. I am not motivated by the desire to continue existing after death. Having lived is enough.

I'm curious too, i do wonder how many atheists based their non faith on hurt from church in the past, or because it just never quite clicked intellectually. i think it may be both, hurt, and then a pursuit for knowledge. my humble opinion. thomas

Nope. Because I don't think an "afterlife" concept has to necessarily be associated with religious concepts...
