I have a stray cocker spaniel/basset hound mix. He was brought to me after he took up at a friends house and he's been here for almost 7 months.

He's got really attached to me and comes to me but when any body else comes in the house (usually males) he runs and acts scared, also if anyone besides the people that live here go to pet him and won't look at them and he'll turn his head and start shaking really bad and usually gets up and runs to a hidden place the first chance he gets.

I have another dog that is very social and loves barking at everyone LOL but if she's barking he still won't stick around he'll run and hide. It's not only with people, if he hears just a little sound like something falling on the floor he runs and hides.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas of what this might be and how to cure it any advice would be helpful THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! :)

what you can do is everytime someone new comes to your place, hold your dog in your arms so that when people come in, you can make your dog feel secure and the visitors can pet your dog while you are holding him.

you have to little by little introduce him slowly to your friends and tell him if he is scared "it is alright, sweetie. this is my friend" also, you can have a small bag of treats by the door that your friends can offer one to your dog when they come to see you. also, explain to your friends what you are trying to accomplish and they will be glad to help out.

eventually he will know your friends do not mean him harm and he will start trusting more. whenever he rans and hides because he is scared of a noise, pick him up, hold him and bring him to the object he got scared of and show him that it is alright.

time will take care of it......he will learn to trust people and not be scared of things as you will be there to make him secured until a time will come he will not be as scared anymore. i love basset hounds. they are the very sweet dogs you can have.

Some one at some time has hurt the dog.If he likes you, then he has a friend.I would say time will help, but after 7 months,he is what you see. There is such a thing as a one person dog---you now have yours. Thanks for helping a helpless dog.I just got a 3 1/2 month old JRT/mix and he is so cute and smart. My 15 year companion passed and he is trying to replace her.He is so far.But not in my heart....Good luck

my one dog was abused and my fiance rescued her from a farm and she took to me right away but like yours afraid of everything. i started working with her in one room of the house. i would put music on low and then gradually raise the volume while talking to the dog and after about a month she got used to the noise and as for being afraid of the other dog just wait and see over time they will become the best of buddies. like mine did and now the two dogs are inseperable. just take the time and have the paitience and things will work out
