The good bacteria is introduced as a culture early in the process. The little buggers digest the sugars and make the yogurt. I make my own by taking a spoonful of "old" yogurt and adding it to my new two gallons of prepared milk.

They add a starter from a mature yogurt at a temperature that the bacteria will live and grow in. The temperature of the milk must be warm enough for the bacteria to thrive on the milk sugars, but not too hot, because the bacteria would be killed. You asked how they get the good bacteria in yogurt. The starter-bacteria changes the milk INTO yogurt.

Well, I think the others have answered how the "live" bacteria "get there".
The "live" bacteria are mostly lactobacillus which produce "lactic acid" making the body acidic (low pH). This bacteria is a 'pro biotic' .....a sort of antibiotic if you will. This "acidic" nature can make the environment hostile for fungal infections caused by Candida (which thrives off of non acidic or 'basic' environment). These bacteria break down 'lactose' in the intestine thus, patients with 'lactose intolerance' with intake of milk products can safely eat yogurt.

the correct term is live culture. yougurt is made from dairy. hence the culture (bacteria) in it is good because it can act as an anibiotie to help combat invading harmful bacteria that may invade your body. yougurt is good for yeast infections in women among other things
