Worldwide, rats and mice spread over 35 diseases. Rodent-borne diseases are spread directly to humans through bite wounds, consuming food or water that is contaminated with rodent feces, coming in contact with surface water contaminated with rodent urine, or through breathing in germs that may be present in rodent urine or droppings that have been stirred into the air (a process known as “aerosolization”). Diseases from rodents are also spread indirectly to humans by way of ticks, mites, and fleas that transmit the infection to humans after feeding on infected rodents. In some cases, the rodents are the reservoirs (carriers) of the diseases, while in other cases the ticks, mites, or fleas act as the disease reservoirs.

OK - what type of rodents are you talking about? Pet hamsters or white mice caged will have little impact. Keep cages clean. Them away from baby and anyone who handles the critters must wash their hands religiously before coming into contact with baby. If these are wild critters infesting your house, that's another story. Get them out of there immediately! If this is a newborn, poison won't be that much of a problem. Traps, exterminators - whatever it takes, get rid of them. The wild ones can carry all kinds of diseases and can even bite newborns. Newborns have a fragile immune system. They need to be protected!

Diseases that can be passed between animals and people are called "zoonotic diseases". Rodents can easily carry parasites (like fleas and ticks) which carry diseases that can infect humans, or their droppings can be a source of infection. If you have a pet rat in a cage, the rat should regularly have vet checkups to make sure it is healthy and clean of parasites.
Newborns are not likely to have as strong an immune system as older children or full grown adults, so I would definitely advise using some kind of rodent control if you have pests in the house. Plus remember toddlers tend to put things in their mouth so you really really wouldn't want any rodent droppings around them.

This is not good living conditions for anyone. Especially a baby. It is a known fact that they carried many diseases. These can be transferred to Humans by coming in contact with any place they have touched(counter-tops, under cabinets, dishes,, clothing..) Rodents have very flexible bones. They can fit into a crack the size of a eraser on the top of a pencil. Some of their disease can also be airborne. There are so many health issues, this is only a start.

EEWWW!!! Newborns immune systems are vulnerable, rodents carry numerous diseases as cockroaches. It's best you talk to your pediatrician regarding the need for sanitary conditions in your newborns' home.
