Hi there..this behaviour goes back to the exotic big cats where they are pawing around food and water to cover it up to be eaten later so that competing predators do not get their meal.

One of my cats does this as well. It is instinctive for some cats to try and "cover" their food or water. Some domesticated house cats still do it and others do not. I would suggest buying a Drinkwell or another type of watering device that moves the water for your cats. They filter the water, and decrease the likelihood of your cat developing a bladder infection because they will drink more water from the moving water source.

My cat Shadow is some what blind, and she scratches on the floor infront of her water dishes to locate them. She even puts her paws in the dishes to make sure its full. She is the only cat I own that does this.

Its part of their nature to want to hide/bury their food and water. My 2 cats do it around the dishes after they get their canned meals. They flip the rug and everything to hid the dishes so they can snack later.

Usually they do it after they eat or drink.

It is instinctive to bury their unused food/water so that other animals can't find it.

You have two cats so they are instinctively 'hiding' the dish from the other.

My cat sometimes piles my laundry from the basket onto his food dish to "bury" it.

It's normal.

My cat will not drink from a bowl at all. She will only have fresh water from a running tap. Strange huh?

My cat also does this, he scratches right near the water bowl-usualy spilling it-its a natural thing. They are marking their territory.

Maybe the dish is too close to the wall? They may be trying to move it.....or the water smells of fecal matter and they want to bury it.

My kitty does that with her food. I think she's pretty much stating "this is mine, don't touch!" when she does it. She especially does it when she gets a treat.
