Do you let them speak, talk over them, wait for them to bow down? Something else?

When I was younger we used to tap the other persons shoulder and say "coke" which meant they owed you a pop. I don't do that any more and I guess it wouldn't go over very well at a business lunch either. Usually I smile and tell the other person to go ahead. Then the other person usually says, "Oh no, you go ahead" then we both laugh. I don't think men do that though. The most appropriate behavior is to graciously let the other talk, however if was in a situation where I needed to be heard and the other person has had a lot to say already, then I would ask them if they would mind if I just quickly made a point. If they did mind then I would back off....but I would get even later. You don't want someone to walk on you especially if you are asserting yourself for a job, promotion, presentaion anything that is important to you, but being gracious and pleasant usually scores points.

I was taught that when two people start speaking at the same time, it was polite to apologize for interrupting what the other person had to say and then let them say it. OF course, the other person may insist that YOU speak first, in which case I would go ahead and speak.

Trying to speak over someone or waiting for them to "bow down" is just plain rude.

Stop talking. If they offer to let you speak first, tell them to go on with what they were saying.
Then really listen. Dont wait for the opportunity to have your say, it may have passed relevance by the time they finish speaking; the subject may have headed off into another direction. You could say "I agree" or "I disagree" and then "listen to this..."/ or/ "what about this..." to get back to the original subject if it changed.
Listening should be a pleasure. If its not, are you waiting to jump in, or is the conversation(alist) boring?

I always break into giggles and hug the other person. Then, I shut up and listen for awhile. It takes great passion to keep up with my energy and whenever anyone does, I know it's a special event in my life, to get to listen to and observe such a vital person. It's a big treat for me to be with a passionate talker. It delights me and takes my breath away. But, there's that power thing some violently natured people can do of deliberately over-talking you to let you "know" that they aren't listening to what you are saying and to make some control-issue point, like how a four year old will cover their ears and go, "YA YA LA LA YA YA" to block someone out. I never again talk with those kind of people after they do it even once to me. It's a sign of extreme immaturity and imbalance for an adult to do that. They have violence in their hearts and mean you harm. I avoid them like syphilis.

I would ask them to go ahead unless they have been controlling the conversation or I was in the middle of a point.

I wouldnt talk over them that seems a little rude. I usualy apologize and tell them to continue what they were saying. Either way it usualy ends in a laugh. : )

Have A Nice Day!

Depends completely on the situation (who the other person is, the subject, how important my message is). I will sometimes still continue until I am done and sometimes I stop and let the other finish.

take off your left shoe and hit them until they shut up, put your shoe back on and resume talking where you left off. That is...if the person is conscious. If not cease talking and run like *ell because that black 'n white unit with the flashing red and blue lights is coming to get you.

It happens, for some reason, a lot to me and my friend Martin. I just let him smpeak full knowing that whatever I was about to say is niether time specifc nor important and have no clue what he needs to say. But he is polite like me and we both just habe a "No you go ahead" fight, lol.
