I live in New York City but that doesn't mean I know the Subway system by heart.
I use this site: http://www.hopstop.com/?action=dir_home

Take the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan, then from the South Ferry station, take the #1 Subway to 59th Street, and walk from there to 53rd and 9th Ave

If you don't want to go through the headache of riding the ferry, you could take an express bus if you live near one (the "X" buses) that can get you to 57th Street. Then you can take the M57 bus over to 9th Avenue and walk down a few blocks to W. 53rd.
The "X" buses are $5.00 and a free transfer to the M57 with the MetroCard

Take whichever subway in the Bronx is nearest you and go to "South Ferry" - you may have to transfer to a different line - and then take the Staten Island Ferry. You'd have to look up which bus on SI would get you where you want to go. The MTA website has the info you need.
