The thing is the Bio-diesel and Methanol will be used a long time from now on. The fact to prove it is the millions of gallons which European Union and mostly USA are producing them.
And there's another with current European BMW car manufacturer which said at SEMA (if not mistaken) that will produce 100 of 7-series BMW equipped with double take (hydrogen and gasoline) engines. The hydrogen is really burned exactly like gas or other combustibles, despite the world wide usage of "hydrogen fuel cells".
In France there's a promising compressed air cars used for taxi (cabs) which have an autonomy of around 140 miles to next charging, but producers said that can be also hybrid, being either propelled by a secondary (bio-diesel or methanol) engine, or used just for charging continuously the pressure air tanks.
Let's not forget the north American effort of Tesla's company which created a super sports car that is fully electrical and has same performance as Lamborghini Gallardo but no pollution.
So in the end, when all will come to a still water and we will use a certain amounts of new-nonpolluting-fuels the real usage of a single type of combustible will be impossible.
As you can see around you the word "Hybrid" is all around us and is cost and environmental effective. The future of the fuels will be in usage among other air compressed or electrical-direct or indirect drive motors, because as mentioned above it will make the world with no pollution and will provide a safety for the future of the human ability to move and why not for the world economy to move, which will be no more without transportation and circulation of products and row matter.

Hydropower has resulted in over 95% damming of our naiton's river, affecting natural ecosystems. Hydropower can do no more than it already has. The trend in our country is to slowly decommission dams. For one reason, river courses have changed over time. The reservoirs created on the Mississippi River dams have claimed so much silt that normally would go to the delta at New Orleans. Hydropower is just at its limit and go no further.
Newest - Cellulosic ethanol. This is still in research but it is much more promising than regular ethanol because it can use an entire crop more efficiently. For example, The Australian government release a report in 2003 detailing many used fuels. The end summary for ethanol was that if cellulosic ethanol can be made practical, all of Australia's transportation needs could be filled.
Photovolatiac cells have dropped in price and are rapidly being included in new home construction. Solar power is a real good bet; so is wind power. But unfortunately, America produces little hydropower infastructure and must import from Germany and the Netherlands. For our economy's sake, it would be prudent to promote wind R&D; in fact, a man I despise (George W Bush) claims wind can serve for 20% of America's energy needs.
And I think thermal depolymerization may have a future. It's great, you can put anything from Butterball feathers and gizards to auto parts in, and come out with petroleum made in a factory. Artifical but chemically-real oil that needs no refining!

Anyway the future of our fuel economy most likely will have no silver bullet but hopefully an array of choices and variety to meet and exceed our needs.

biodiesel is good. ethanol is good.
But we are pretty close to production capacity on materials to produce it ( feed corn etc.. )
