Start with a portable gasoline generator.

I like the Honda "EU-Series" since they can provide clean enough power to run a computer -- most do not. Honda also has a PARALLEL cable to allow you to put two units together.

You need to determine if you want to generate some electricity (for backup) or all of your electricity and get off the grid. If you are looking at partial then you need an approved cut-over switch.

If you want to be totally self sufficient then you can use natural gas, diesel, gas or propane powered stationary installed generators.

There are solar panels, photovoltaic (PV) panels, windmills but these would have to be combined with a battery system to provide 7/24 coverage.

You could also look at exploiting a river or stream on your property for a micro hydro project.

Many environmentalists think that it is easy to produce electricity and that George W. Bush is evil because he lets us keep using Fossil fuels. Fact is that Fossil fuels are one of the best methods for making electricity, besides Nuclear power which takes millions of dollars worth of equipment and materials. You can try getting a simple generator and try cranking it with a crank that allows mechanical advantage. Otherwise, you can try solar panels but you are looking at using perhaps $200,000 worth of panels to power your house. Or you can get a donkey to turn a really large crank attached to a series of gears and a generator. Or a hamster which will provide enough energy to light an LED. You are crazy if you actually think you can make an efficient generator to power anything useful. Your computer alone, in its lifetime, has probably used tens or hundreds of gallons worth of fossil fuel in its lifetime.

Solar cells are nice in a sunny area. Small hydro-electric generators can be used if you are near a river. And win generators are good in windy areas. Stay away from nuclear...It may upset your neighbors if they see a nuke plant in your backyard.
