oh, two horrible answers, those first two. okay, I have actually had oily skin and been prone to acne my whole life. It is absolutely untrue that any foods you eat make you break out. it is also untrue that you should wash your face three times a day, believe it or not the natural oils your skin produce are actually healthy. do wash your face morning and night, but use a gentle cleanser. I am using Biore Ice and it is really working out for me. do not exfoliate often, (exfoliating is when you use stuff with grains in them). The mistake lots of people with oily skin make is using harsh treatments. St. Ives apricot scrub for oily skin once a week before bed. it's important not to exfoliate in the morning because then that brand new vulnerable skin is exposed to the elements and impurities in our environment. also, even people with very oily skin should use a good lightweight oil free moisturizer, again biore is really working out for me. This one will hurt a little but it's the truth- don't pop zits as long as you can help it. when you pop zits too early the pore is left wide open and a new pimple pops up again, or worse, you get a big scab. popping zits before they're really ready to go also causes scarring. Trust me, I know! it is best to let them pop naturally like when you're washing your face. (yeah, rinse with a wash cloth, zits that are ready to go will pop and you'll get a more thorough cleaning.) and when a zit does pop, wash your face because the stuff that comes out will make new zits come up.
Edited: I forgot to tell you, drinking a lot of water actually helps too. dehidration causes dry skin, dry skin causes more oil.

i had some bad acne for awhile caused by stress from school. even after i dropped out (temporarily), my skin was still pretty bad. i would wash with soap every day, and i used those clearasil pads for awhile but those didn't do any good either and they burned like hell when i used them.
then i decided to try an experiment after reading an article. i stopped using soap and started only washing my face with water. see the detergents in most soaps are very harsh on your skin. they strip away the oils that your body produces naturally. so your body creates more oil to compensate for the loss of oil from the soap.
if you wash with water only, your face will get more oily for a few days. this is because your skin is used to producing a certain amount of oil because of the fact that you've been using soap for so long. your skin will continue to produce the same amount of oil despite the fact that you've stopped using soap. to combat this extra oiliness, simply rinse your face more often with water. throughout the day, rinse a few times whenever you get the chance--this cuts the oils and keeps your face from getting pimply during this "detox" period.
eventually (after 3 or 4 days for me), my facial skin seemed to balance out and now it produces much less oil. i now wash my face three times a day, with water only: once in the shower, once before bed, and once when i wake up in the morning.
i've noticed since i started doing this (about two weeks ago), my skin looks much better. i still get a few pimples here and there, and there are marks on my face that are the scars from all the pimples i used to have, but the pimples i get now are nothing compared to what i used to get. they don't hurt like before, they don't get all red and huge, and they go away a lot faster. i think the chemicals in the soap irritated them and made them worse before, but now that i'm using water they're much less invasive and noticeable.
i hope this works for you as well as it did for me, good luck!
