I have seen them both and I like the sand ceremony best. It is not too much. The unity candle is traditional so the sand ceremony should fit in nicely. Congrats on your marriage.

Oh I LOVE the sand idea. I was going to use that at my wedding, but only saw the idea after I had purchased my unity candle. I dont think it would be to much.
I was going for a more comfortable feel at my wedding. And I think the sand part acheives that. Its not as romantic at the unity candle, but I still think it adds that something extra to a wedding. And if you used your wedding colors to add to the color of the sand, how pretty that will be.
Dont worry about what others might think. I dont think it will be offbeat. But some people just cant let go of tradition. So dont let it hurt your feelings. Because there will also be those others that remember that and tell all their friends. I went with a differnt kind of wedding dress, and am still recieving compliments about it to this day!
Congrats on the upcoming marriage.

Well I think it might be a little too much to have them sit through. If I were to do some type of a unity ceremony I would def. choose the sand over the candles. It's a good idea but I don't think MY guests would wanna watch us pour sand - they're more of partyers!

Either one of those is usually done very quickly, so I don't think it's too much to have your guests sit through. I love the unity candle, but if you will have an outdoor ceremony, it probably won't work...candles blowing out etc. It sounds as if you want the sand, and hey...people will probably remember it!

The sand idea is always fun, but not appropriate if your wedding will be a night time one or formal. However, if you're already doing the knot ceremony, you'll probably leave a memorable impression on your guests. I'd focus on that, with plenty of pictures and video since it is so unique and beautiful.

Well, if it's going to be outside, I would do the sand, simply because I've seen people try to do the unity candles outside, and one good gust of wind will blow them out in a hurry!
It's your wedding ceremony, do what YOU want to make it personal for you.

Like the others said, if you are having your ceremony outside; sand is the easiest way to go.
Sand also lasts longer at home. Candles need to be cleaned if they get dirty etc.
It is also cheaper to get vases at Walmart and sand at a craft store. (or get reptile sand at a pet store) than get unity candles, esp the nice ones.

Take in consideration of where you are having your ceremony. If the sand spills, is it going to be easy to clean up? If not go with the candles.

You should do what feels right to you. Personally, I like the Unity Candle idea. Very romantic.
