Students who do NOT persevere and are NOT diligent would usually give up before they arrive at the correct answer or any answer at all. Students who persevere and are diligent would learn in the process of arriving at their answers.

In life sucess is often the sucessful conclusion of something that gives a definite outcome. You can spend 90% of the required time on a project but fail to complete it. So the 90% of the time is wasted. Perseverance is the quality that will make sure the effort is not wasted.
In short, perseverance might help to avoid waste of effort. It lifts you over a hurdle that you might have given up.
