You won't have to worry about dieting. You will be limited to a liquid and soft diet. If you feel like eating, and you probably will not for the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery. The first day you may have Water, Do not drink anything carbonated. This will help keep the nausea down. Broth, ice cream, milk shakes, apple sauce, mashed banana the first day. After the first day or two you can add Jello , rice and Oatmeal, pudding, you can try toast. Keep it simple and bland. You will be nauseous after surgery and may continue to be the day after as well. After 3 days you should be able to go back to your normal diet. Unfortunately having a tonsillectomy is worse for Adults than it is for children, so it will take a few days to recover. Get some rest.

Your sore throat may last for two to three weeks, but try to get back to your normal diet as soon as possible - avoid sticking to a jelly and ice cream diet.
Some foods can cause irritation and pain - avoid sour drinks (such as citrus fruit juices), spicy foods and roughly textured foods for about 10 days or so.
Avoid taking aspirin, since this painkilling drug can exacerbate bleeding. Only take those painkillers recommended by your doctor or surgeon.

Day 1: Clear liquids tend to be easiest to swallow and digest. Try non-citrus juices, popsicles, Jell-O and non-carbonated beverages.
Day 2: Ice cream, instant breakfast, soft cereal, milk shakes and puddings.
Day 3: All of the above items and mashed potatoes, eggs, milk toast, pancakes and other soft food

**Chewing sugarless gum prior to attempting drinking or eating will help relieve throat muscle spasm.**

I had my tonsils out at 16, and trust...ice cream is NOT allowed. You are also not allowed to drink from a straw for a few weeks. Plus 2 of my kids have had this done as well. Keep popsicles, italian ice, liquid tylenol, you will need to have things at room temperature or colder. Keep an eye out for vomiting. If your vomiting too much, you will dehydrate and need iv fluids. It is rougher the older we are. You might try to see if your comfortable with flat soda...ginger ale, 7 up, etc. Good luck!
Dont forget to get, applesauce, yougurt, stay away from red colored popcicles, in case you bleed, soft food. As the days go by and you can tolerate more, yuo will know when your ready!

You will want to eat soft foods. Mashed potatoes are good for this. There are so many variety's ex: garlic, cheese, plain with gravy. Creamed soups are another choice ex: broccoli and cheese, chicken. Grits are also good, get a variety pack of the instant kind, don't eat the bacon ones for at least 3-4 days after your surgery. And the most important part LOTS AND LOTS of ICE CREAM.... Hope you feel better soon, and have a speedy recovery!!

I had mine out at 16. (And the chicken pox at 30!) It's not easy when you're older like that.

Don't listen to them about "all the ice cream you want." Ice cream HURTS. Stick to popsicles, but avoid red ones in case you start bleeding. Pudding would be good too.

Good luck!

It's going to hurt to swallow, so you want soft foods.

Sugar free pudding and Jell-O
100% fruit juice popsicles.
Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat
Carnation Instant Breakfast
Baby food. (I know, but it's actually pretty good, and you can get your fruit and veggies that way)
Soup is always good. Especially smooth ones like tomato.
Anything cold is going to feel really good, so you may want to stock up on those fruit-sicles and stuff for smoothies.

cold clear beverages are best (Popsicles, jello, apple juice, grape...no citrus (it burns)...no potato chips of Frito's (they scratch)...
limit milk and ice cream as when the mix with the blood in your stomach could make you sick and THROWING UP RIGHT NOW is NOT GOOD!
around the 6-10th day after your tonsillectomy, stay near a phone in case you start to bleed (common when the scar tissue sloughs off and it can cause healed tissue to go with it, thus exposing major blood vessels and could cause a lot of bleeding!)

You need to eat a lot of soft foods for two weeks, mac and cheese , ice cream, jello , pudding, etc. Your doctor should go over a list of things and tell you what to eat and not eat, if not ask him or her I am sure they would tell you

It is not fun, very uncomfortable, but it passes, mashed potatoes and veg, soup, soft bread, mostly soft food. Make sure you gargle and be gentle no yelling give you self time to heal
Good luck
