There is a great company out there called Amherst Media. They are one of the largest producers of photography handbooks, guidebooks, etc.

Take some time to check out their website: www.amherstmedia.com They even have a section for beginners and novices that breakdown many aspects of photography from composition to lighting to posing to equipment.

I am a novice at photography and have found several good books for the subject. The first I bought was "Digital Photographer's Handbook" by Tom Ang (3rd edition). It is published by DK. It covers equipment, techniques, effects, and troubleshooting. It has a lot of pictures and diagrams. (The ISBN number is: 0-7566-2355-3). The second book I would recommend is National Geographic's "Photography Field Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures" second edition by Peter K. Burian and Robert Caputo. This one is shorter and focuses mostly on technique. The ISBN for that one is: 0-7922-5676-x. I would also recommend just looking at all kinds of pictures from professional photographers and noting what kinds of subjects and techniques they use. You should be able to find these at Amazon.com or your local Borders book store. I hope you have fun!

Kodak has a great beginner's book, out of print now, and aimed for film, but all the same photography principles still apply. Look on Amazon for that, and a great book, "Understanding Exposure", by Bryan Peterson.
