Someone suggested that you yell and then start singing (basically putting some musical tones in your yell), but don't do that under any circumstances!! The other recommendations about breathing and vocal instruction is key. Yelling really isn't the best possible thing for a voice, and even Broadway singers who use the Belting technique aren't *yelling*.

I took the class lessons for a couple of terms, then I took private lessons at the University here. If there's a University nearby and you'd really like to do private lessons, get in touch with the receptionist at the university or student services office and ask if any of the vocal performance students provide private lessons (which they should, as part of a vocal performance major is taking vocal pedagogy courses). One of the instructors I had, who was pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree gave hour lessons for $20 per hour and she was fantastic.

One thing to keep in mind is that while you may sing softly, you may also sing with a lot of air in your tone, which will make your voice seem softer and not quite as strong. Once you are singing on the breath, there's often a noticeable change in volume.

As for singing clearly - that has NOTHING to do with "power" or projection, and everything to do with diction!! Enunciate! :)

Good luck!

The simple answer is to seek a vocal instructor.

This can be costly. There's one in my town that charges 35 bucks for an hour long visit.

There's GREAT news, though! I found a vocal class at my local Junior College. It cost me a total of around $100... or three local lessons worth and gave me the experience of getting to know more people.

As an additional bonus, you get backstage passes to local small events so you can witness the preparation process that some performers go through each night.

Overall, it was a very enriching and rewarding experience.

Astral Projection and other out of body experiences are actually measurable and can be recreated in a laboratory setting (Science just published one study, and there have been previous studies and experiments published in other publications). To vastly oversimplify, it's not made up, but it is all in your head. More specifically the temporoparietal region of your brain, the exact area thought to be the angular gyrus, one of the parts of that portion of your brain is responsible for how your brain and body perceive each other/are in relation to one another. This is why people see their own bodies and feel themselves floating during things like OOBEs and NDEs. This is also why people who claim to be able to Astral Project (OOBE) at will cannot name common items placed in plain view even if they have claimed to have gone to where they were asked to go or said they were going in testing circumstances when asked to do so. They didn't actually GO there, they just thought they went there. There's actually a very rare medical condition in which the body/brain "connection" (so to speak) is broken to the point someone will actually go through life having sudden instances of feeling their arm is near the window while the rest of them is still across the room in bed or other such issues. When scientists stimulate the temporoparietal parts of the brains of people who do not have the same condition, they experience the same thing as people with the condition experience. It's also thought to be related to things like sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming. No, you are not going to encounter a demon, in other words, unless you want and expect to encounter a demon. Then you can be assured that the demon, like the sensation you feel, is most likely living in your angular gyrus.

Shygirl,
The technique I use to project my voice is to EXERCISE MY BREATHING. I learned in a Theatrical Arts class that vocal projection is attained by effective breathing and careful articulation.
Breathe from the bottom of your diaghram (below your lungs) and focus clear diction with your mask (the facial muscles that combine to articulate the sounds.)
Exercises that are used in the Theatrical jonre is to repeatedly recite the "Figure-8" sounds: "Ah - Oh - Ooh - Or - Ah - Aye - Eeh - Aye."
Paying careful attention (again) to your breathing, these sounds will help you articulate yourself toward your goals.
I learned careful vocal singing crafting as a Barber Shop Quartet singer. - As such, simple repetition is most effective.

Try this - when youre in your car alone, start pretending youre yelling at some one then instead of yelling, start singing the yell.

Then work on your diction, slowing words down then pick up the pace as you get the words down.

Heres my fav from Cheap Tricks - I want you to want me....Feelin all alone without a friend, you know, you feel like dying

i take private lessons, and you need to learn to breathe from the bottom of your torso and push the air up. while doing that you need to experiment and practice singing loud but when you go hoarse, stop and continue the next day. gradually you will see rapid results =]

Speak from your chest, not from your throat. Put some wind behind it. Just put a little oomph behind it like you are talking (not shouting) to someone in the back of the room.

Practice practice, and you can try singing in louder more bawdy/raucus tones.
