The Church's role is to provide the truth, so that its members can assimilate that truth and make it available to their consciences. A conscience is only as reliable as the quality of information it can draw upon in making moral decisions. A conscience formed on the truth is a reliable moral guide. One formed on the mores of society is essentially useless in making moral decisions.
