Ah, the government gets approval for telling adults to buckle up.
As adults we are supposed to set a good example for children, so we should all WANT to buckle up right?
Actually as a 44 year old, I think most "laws" that protect adults are made JUST to collect THE fines . uhm, all except the no spanking law that is.

Mandatory (in Australia they are). My husband works in the Intensive Care Department of the local hospital and the number of people he sees come in there with horrific injuries just because they didn't have a seat-belt on is frightening.
I HATE IT when I see people crammed in a car without seat-belts and pray that the Police will catch them. EVEN WORSE is when there are children without seatbelts on. I hit the car horn and wiggle my seatbelt and glare at them. How dangerous to fly along the road at the speeds people do and not be secure.

Since I started working in a hospital doing admissions I have seen a lot of car accident victims. Some that are thrown from the car because they were not wearing a seat belt. This usually does not end well. Although on the other hand I have also seen people brought in that were wearing seat belts and had to be cut out of the vehicle. They were still badly injured. In the end it comes down to where the vehicle was hit, the speed of the vehicle(s), and a lot of circumstances. But I always choose to wear my seat belt because in my opinion and experience I have seen more people survive that were wearing their seat belts!! Good Luck and always drive sober.

Im a crazy person when it comes to a seatbelt. As soon as I get into the car no matter if its me driving someone else driving or if im in the backseat, I put my seatbelt on. Ive been in two bad car accidents and the seatbelt saved me both times. When I was in highschool everyone who was in my car had to wear a seatbelt. If they took it off as I was driving I would pull over until they would put it back on. Even now I hate it is someone who is in my car does not wear one. Seatbelts should be for everyone. I dont think adults should have the right to make their own decisions when it comes to that. And I think that its good that they made it against the law to not wear your seatbelt. I dont know if thats for all the states, but it is for mine.

Unfortunately, when adults are left to their own devices, they frequently make the wrong decision. In the case of seat belts in automobiles, that can lead to serious injury and death of other motorists. It also jacks our insurance premiums, which the rest of us do NOT appreciate. So I say - buckle up or pay up! A hundred bucks for the first offense, five hundred for the second, lose your license (permanently) for the third, five years in state prison if you're foolish enough to drive without a license and not wear your seatbelt a fourth time!

In Australia they have been mandatory for all for almost 30 years. Why on earth would you not want to wear one. They save lives. Wishful thinking won't stop you going through the windscreen in a car accident

Seat belts save lives and some people need to be saved from themselves. I'm glad it's a law. It has undoubtly saved lives and prevented many debilitating injuries in people who otherwise would not have worn a seat belt because they were "too cool" but did because they did not want a fine. Lady Diana would be alive today if she had worn hers.

I think that if your under the age of 18 you should have to other then that if your an adult then you should be able to make that decision on your own, infact there have been cases where people have died because of not being able to get out of the car becuse of the seatbelts. Then again there is always that chance of going through the windshield so like I said should be up to you as an adult.

Mandatory for everyone -- no exceptions. It's not that difficult a thing to do, and it could very well save your life (or someone else's). And it's easy to get into the habit of doing it.
I've been wearing mine every trip for the past... well, I can't recall how long now, but it's been quite some time. :) Now I feel almost naked if I get distracted and start to drive without wearing it.

I feel seatbelts are a must. They do save lives and if it takes only 5 seconds to prevent a death I would wear a seatbelt.
