On Saturday I took my puppy to the vet to get her shot to treat her sarcoptic mange (scabies). They also gave her a vaccine for Bortella. On Tuesday night she started throwing up and having trouble breathing. The paper they gave us said that some reactions for the Bortella vacc. would include those and we should take her in if this happens. So today, Wednesday, I took her in first thing in the morning, the doctor said it couldn't be from that. He told us it was Parvo, but she has gotten a vaccine for Parvo already. But he wants to get her tested for it. So what I want to know is it possible that she has Parvo????

I just answered one about parvo, yikes i hope it isn't epidemic..

I would be more watchful of the symptoms of parvo, bloody stool, lethargy, vomiting, the diarrhea is the main concern.

In my experience if the dog was recently vaccinated for parvo there is a good chance that the test for parvo will come up as a false-positive, but I don't think that your vet would start treatment unless s/he saw the tell tale signs.

Just watch her closely, if you see the bad poo and it smells sickly-sweet, it may be parvo and get her to an emergency vet asap..

I wouldn't worry though, it may actually be the Bordetella shot, in my shelter experience I have seen many a dog cough and puke after the shot. It's like a flu shot, sometimes you feel a bit of the symptoms it is protecting you from.. irony..

Good Luck!

First of all why did your vet give the bortella vaccine? Puppies cant take all these chemicals in their bodies at one time. The pups immune system could be comprmosed now. If it is Parvo DONT wait . Yes even with the shot I have known dogs getting Parvo. I would find a new vet actually.

This site will give you the information you may want on Parvo...symptoms, etc. http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm

It is possible for a pup to contract Parvo, even though they have been innocculated. She should be tested to be sure. However, it concerns me that the information page on the vaccine she had lists these as symptoms of a reaction and that your vet is not taking it into consideration.

Choosing a vet is like choosing a pediatrician, it should be someone you feel comfortable talking to about your dog and someone who's opinion you trust. Even if your vet is correct, it doesn't sound like you are very secure with the vet you're using. Interview a vet like you would a doctor and find one that's the best fit for you and your dog.

Has your dog been around any other sick dogs? If so the yes it could be Parvo. Their vaccinations are like ours in that it's not a 100% guarantee. The vaccines only help to prevent the disease, & if the dog does come down with it then hopefully it won't be as bad for them.

For your dogs sake as well as your own...I hope it is NOT Parvo.

If she had the beginnings of the Parvo virus before she was vaccinated against it, it is always possible so make sure to get her checked for it.

If you are not happy with your vet, don't be afraid to find another one. They don't know everything. But make sure if you are going to change that they can get her in tomorrow. If it is Parvo, it needs treated ASAP. Every moment counts. I don't want to scare you, but I want you to realize how serious Parvo is.

If she has not received 4 sets of puppy shots than it is possible. I would go ahead and have her tested, because she may not have it. It sounds like you caught it early if she does have it, so the good news is she will probably be okay (and it won't cost so much). I hope that she gets better!

Also, one of my dogs got sick from coronavirus. It has almost the same symptoms as parvo, and it is not commonly vaccinated for.

A Parvo test isn't really that expensive, so I would have it done. I am surprised he didn't do it right then and there. It only takes about 10 minutes to run and get results!

I hope your puppy will be OK. Good luck!

hmm, I never seen Parvo to affect breathing. But the Parvo test will be the only thing that will rule it out/in.....

I probaly would have stopped that med, despite what the vet says/said.

My dog broke out with hives after being on Amoxil and Reglan, so I stopped it. Still not sure which one it was that caused it, but now I know one of em does :)

Sure is possible, just because they are vaccinated doesn't mean that they are totally safe. Get the test and start treatment.. Otherwise, Parvo is a death sentence.

I am no expert, but I worked for vets and sometimes you have to watch out. I hate to say it, but I have seen them order lots of unnecessary tests for the $. If your dog got the vaccine I would think it was the reaction. I would try a different vet; ask for recommendations from friends or coworkers, for a vet they trust.

Parvo is serious and deadly, I would get a second opinion asap.
