I would say your letter might include the following:
1. Complimenting him on raising a daughter with such good characteristics. You can specifically mention some things that you like about her that she learned from her parents.
2. Explain your position in life and how you intend to take care of his daughter. For example, you can tell him about your job and other activities that will help him to realize how responsible and mature you are.
3. Tell him that you love his daughter very much and you would like his permission and blessing to marry her. Express your sorrow that he won't be able to be there for the wedding (if this is true) and thank him again for raising such a wonderful daughter.

You fill in the words and the heartfelt details. He'll love it.

You are so wonderful to put his mind at ease while he's doing such a tough job over there.

Just assure him you will always be there for his daughter and respect her. :)
Try to add in a bit of humor or something so he knows you're not just "sucking up." Parents can smell B.S. a mile away and you're best off not to "gush." Keep it real!

Your woman knows him best, so have her approve the letter first to make sure he won't take offense to anything in it.

fyi: If the dad can't be there to walk his daughter down the aisle, that's really going to hurt - just be forewarned.

You might also mention your support system. Something like, my Mom and Dad love your daughter very much, and have agreed to help out when they can, they know it is tough with you being so far from home. My Mom is thrilled that your daughter calls her Mom, and my Dad is the greatest
Mention things like health insurance, life insurance. Mention investments if you have some, but you need not go into detail there, just the fact that you have some, and are thinking about the future is enough. Mention your job, that it is a good one with benefits, you like it, you plan on retiring from there.
And do not forget to tell him about how you love his daughter, and that you care for her. Mention a sterling quality that you like about her, like she is independent, smart, funny. Talk about where you will live, that it is a safe neighborhood. and thank him, and her Mom, for such a great daughter!
How nice you want to talk to her father! Congrats on your marriage, and best wishes to the bride!

OH, that is so great you are doing that. I like hearing people asking for permission first. It will show the father what kind of man his daughters marrying.

Just try and think, if you had a kid that was getting married, what would you like to know about him?

Let him know things you would usually find out by interaction with him, which you missed out on.

Good luck, happy marriage

Make sure that you stress the fact that you love, respect, and intend on taking very good care of her. Say nothing but kind words. Remember, this guy really knows how to use a weapon. Good luck to you and your future wife. Always treat her like a queen and life will be good.

That is really cool! Just be yourself, and the words will come to you. Of course, make sure you tell him how much you care and respect his daughter, and of course how much you love her! And you will take very good care of her for the rest of your life! Lastly, ask him to give you his blessing/consent for the marriage, and that you would be honored to be his daughter's husband. Reason I know all this? My husband told my dad that (only in person) and it worked! Good luck!

Tell him about yourself, about your background, about what you learned from the men in your life about how to treat a woman and in particular how to treat the women they love.

Tell him why you love his daughter and how you want nothing but the best for her. Thank him for the great job he did in helping to raise the woman you love, and then ask for his apprval.

Good luck and given his posting, I hope you get the chance to meet him.

Nothing. Be a man and go talk to him. When he gets back that is. It would be more appropriate to wait untill he gets back, in order to ask for his daughters hand, then to send him a letter saying HI!
Don't you think he would like to attend his daughters wedding? If you two are really in love, Waiting won't be a problem.
