If you know longer get into trouble, is it still possible to pursue a career in law enforcement (i.e., police officer, sheriff, etc.)? Is there a waiting period?

Only serious answers, please. I prefer people who know what they are talking about...Thanks

I don't think any police agency would hire you with a felony. Sometimes they will hire people who admit to having done drugs in the past, or who have gotten a DUI, or things like that, but if you've been convicted of a felony crime that's a totally different story.

Law Enforcement Career w/ Felony Record.?=NOPE!

No professional department would allow it, IF their background screeners are doing their jobs, and IF the record was entered by the court.

Shortly after I left Dallas P.D., a hooker and a drug dealer were arrested IN an academy class, when an officer recognized a former arrestee in the class, and checked everybody's record. The Department was so strapped for officers, the screeners were not paying attention at all.

Some remote areas might allow it, even if state law prohibited it, simply because not everybody follows the rules.

In southern Indiana, there are a Sheriff and deputy with criminal domestic battery records, who can't legally carry firearms. They wear them while on duty, because of a loophole in the law, then lock them in the jail when they leave!!

Convicted felons can't become law enforcement officers. It is possible that you could become a law enforcement officer if you receive a pardon. However, your chances of getting hired might still not be good. Getting law enforcement officer jobs can be very competitive. Any red flags can hurt your chances of getting hired by some agencies.

You can try to get your record expunged or receive a pardon from the Governor, which will clear your record but it depends on how long ago your felony was and how you are doing since then. It is a long and drawn out process, takes years at least where I am, I do pardon boards for the Commonwealth of PA. Only then can you maybe have a chance, but I highly doubt it. Look into it in your state, see what the pardon process is and see what they say.

to be employed in law enforcement you must have No Felony Record. All agencies are required to do a complete background check. If you have a felony they cannot hire you. Your only option would be to attempt to get your record expunged. For that you would need to see a lawyer. Usually only juvenile records are expunged, so unless you were a juvenile when you were convicted it probably won't work for you. Felons are also not permitted to own or carry firearms.

That would probably depend on the state you are in, which probably have varying requirements, the felony in question, how long ago, and your age at the time of the felony.

In West Virginia for example, the anser is no (see link, last paragraph).

If not at the state level, the requirements may vary further (city police or sheriff's deputy).

In any case, it certainly is NOT going to help on your application. Obviously don't hide it, they do check.

Felony Juvenile record or an adult one? The juvenile record would be sealed and generally unavailable to a routine backround check.
Generally, a felony conviction will bar you from law enforcement employment.
If you're serious, then try to get the conviction expunged from your record. To do that you are going to need the assistance of an attorney.
Good luck.

Well this program has pretty strict conditions for its background checks. You are still young, so if you stay out of trouble, and do some good work for the community, you can overcome it. The charges you had look relatively minor. DWI, DUI and hit-and-run are really the only automobiles charges that can screw you for life. Simply being arrested though should not prevent you from getting a job if you weren't convicted. In fact, it is illegal for employers to ask if you've been arrested (but to ask if you have been convicted of a crime.)
