My flag is old and ready to be retired. What should I do?
Section 8k of the Flag Code (see below) states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." We recommend that you contact your local VFW Chapter and ask them for help properly disposing of your flag. And be sure to consider providing a small donation to them for their assistance. Or you can contact your local Elks Lodge (who created the idea of Flag Day, established officially by President Truman, himself a member of the Elks), the American Legion, or the Knights of Columbus. Some Boy Scout and Girl Scout troups also can provide this service.

Flag Disposal - How to Dispose of Unserviceable Flags

Since September 11, 2001 more people than ever have been flying the United States flag in front of their homes.

Flags, like most items made of fabric, are subject to wear and tear.

Flags, unlike, let's say, your well-worn jeans, can't simply be thrown out.

According to the Flag Code, "when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning"

(Our Flag: Frequently Asked Questions, The American Legion).

The above are correct. A tattered flag is to be burned, not thrown away or tossed on the ground. To fully treat the flag the the way the code is written you shouldn't touch your new one with your bare hands either. Cotton gloves, should be worn when handling it. The entire history and code of the flag can be found at the Pueblo Colorado web site that has tons of free information.

Bring it to the local American Legion or VFW post. We veterans will see that it is disposed of properly. We burn it, and often, we'll save a years' worth of worn flags and hold a Watchfire where we respectfully burn 'em all while remembering our fallen comrades. Those Watchfires are usually open to the public.

By burning it. Not in a disrespectful way, in public, but burning it is the proper disposal. Interesting that I should know the answer to this question when I do not salute it, but I do respect it.

But really a lot of the people are right. the local V.F.W. and Boy Scouts have a ceremony every 6 months or so.
