My church is in South Carolina, and we see nothing wrong with dancing. We are a contemporary Baptist church - not sure if that has anything to do with it. My pastor and his fiance are getting married in April, and they will have dancing at their reception. They are not getting married where we hold worship services because we hold them in a movie theater. If we owned a church and reception hall, and they were to get married there, I believe there would still be dancing.
I'm only guessing here, but maybe the reason some churches have a policy against dancing at the reception is because a lot of non-church members ask permission to marry inside their churches. A lot of people, even though they may not be Christians, still want to be married inside a church. So, the church leadership may be concerned about what kind of dancing might take place. Again, I'm only guessing.
If you are getting married at a church you attend and are a member of, I would have a talk with your pastor and ask him his reasons. Explain that the reception is a celebration of your vows to each other before God and that you see nothing wrong with dancing on such a happy occasion (and there's nothing in the Bible against it). If he refuses, you might have to think about having the reception somewhere else. Or you could try a contemporary church in your area.
Good luck and congratulations!

That's crazy. I think you must be going to a Reformed Baptist church. There's a big difference. I'm a Baptist in Bath, NY, and at my church they encourage dancing. At Reformed Baptist churches, they're less into all the social aspects of Christianity. Hope this helps.

I would have to believe that the reason that many Baptist churches preach against dancing has to do with having an unmarried person dancing belly to belly with their arms around each other.
I think that dancing is beautiful, but some can't see past these issues.
Some families get around that by having the reception in a ballroom at a hotel.
If it is off-premises, they can only frown, but they cannot stop you.

It is silly dogma from many years ago. It is not biblical. King David danced naked before the lord and all Israel. We also say that Jesus didn't drink wine. I'm a Baptist and will be the first to admit that we do silly things. We love Jesus though. Try a Pentecostal Church. They love Jesus too and people might just swing from the ceiling if the Holy Spirit moves.

okay, i am a baptist because i believe that baptists are the only people that will pull out a Bible and not twist its meaning when you ask them a questions.
we. are. so. wrong. about. dancing.
it started out in a culture where dancing was almost provacative and now it has come to this point. to say that you can't dance with your husband - when i am sure that the two of you will be having sex - is completely assanine. that is the definition of legalism: making rules that are unfounded by Scripture. to answer the rest of your question: there are baptist churches that allow dacing.
PS david danced naked, and the person who scolded him was struck barren.

Really? I was part of a dance group that danced in services! It was part of the worship.
I also reguarly attended Barn Dances when I was a kid - though those were in the attached church hall - bit hard to hold a big barn dance in the pews.
However I went to a methodist church in England, they tend to be a bit more liberal about such things

You can, but you have to keep both feet on the floor. You know why Southern Baptists don't make love standing up? It could lead to dancing! How many Southern Baptist preachers does it take to change a light bulb? CHANGE???????????????????????????? You know you're a SB preacher when you go to a family reunion and pass the offering plate. reception could be held somewhere else after the wedding.
Babtist against dancing because Herod's daughter, danced for him when he was drunk and promised her whatever she desired and she desired John the Babtist (Jesus' cousin) to be beheaded.
So it would be quite inappropriate to Dance at a Baptist Church.

Well I believe that it has to do with how other people will view you. For example, if you are a female and a male sees you dancing across the room, he may become attracted to you. And/or let's assume that the man that saw you was interested, he may dance in a non appropriate way. For that matter, they may not allow it.
