ok, i guess i didn't explain myself 100%. i understand that h r block needs and should be compensated for their services. i wouldn't expect anyone to do anything for free. i suppose i was just thinking it crazy that no one there explained to me that this might happen. i mean that's 200.00!! for what? 20 min. of typing. i guess what i meant was did it come out of my refund before it was offset? i realize that the people in h r block has to make a living, etc. but if the circumstances were explained to me that i might have to pay 200.00 for possibly nothing, i would have not done my taxes with h r block.

I work for a HR Block franchise office. Yes, you do still owe for the work done for you. The small offices are really on a tight budget, and if your refund was held, they don't get paid. Plus the parent company has them in bad position with the anticipation loans they started offering based on pay check stubs this year. If someone came in and got denied for that loan, and came back in to do taxes and got denied the instant loan, that office gets NOTHING for doing the federal tax form and submitting it. And those people you deal with in the office are the ones being hurt by it, not HR Block. Guess what I am saying is we are on your side. Don't do us bad because the government treated you badly.

First, I would take the matter up with a manager of H&R Block. (I would have called them after receiving three checks instead of two as I would have suspected a mistake). If you get no satisfaction, tell them you will go to the State Attorney's Office. I would also discuss the matter with the IRS. However, at the end of the day, if the IRS wants you to pay it, I would pay it because you definitely don't want their agents chasing you.

Do you believe that the IRS is going to let H&R Block have its fees before your student loan debts were paid? Hardly.

Your H&R Block fees were for tax preparation and filing. You have received those services and are responsible for paying for those services. Your tax preparation charges are detailed in the invoice you received.

Since your loan was denied, you will not be responsible for any finance charges which were going to come out of your refund.

Yes- it's just like any other place, they did a service for you so you have to pay them.

You could have saved yourself the $200 and done the taxes yourself if you are so upset at having to pay them that much. H & R Block has been around long enough for people to realize that they are not cheap- you should have asked around. And yes, you still need to pay them- the government is going to get it's money first and foremost.

Yes. H&R Block still provided you with the service. It doesn't matter if the education dept. takes your refund or if you get twice as much back as you expected, you still have to pay them.

Yes, I believe you do but it was probably taken out of your refund since thats normally how they get their fee ( for the Refund Anticipation Loan, and since you opted for that I assume you paid for the actual filing fees already) before the Dept of Education got ahold of it. Call H&R Block. Think of it this way... it's 2,000 less you owe on your student loan.

Absolutely! You are paying Block for a service, the preparation of your return. You are NOT paying them for the refund.

What happens to the refund is not up to Block. It's your fault for not paying on your student loan. Block is an innocent party in that and you are obligated to pay for the service that they rendered.

Yes; they still performed a service for you, for which they expect to be paid. Whether or not you get a refund has nothing to do with them.

Yep, don't matter if you're getting a refund or not. H&R still took the time to prepare you're taxes. They still need to get payed for they're services. Unfortunately.
