There is not a whole lot we can do. Giving them money has proven to be useless.
The fact of the matter is you cannot lift another society out of poverty - they have to do it themselves. Look at the 'oil rich' nations of the middle - they have immense wealth but remain mired in poverty because they failed to reform their social and legal institutions.

First we must realize that it is a problem. I do not believe Americans really feel it is a problem. Unless we live it, it is not real. We still have poverty here in America and because we do not see it every day it is not real. I think once Americans believe in the poverty and massive diseases that are in third world countries than it will be easy to fix the problem. If we can send 82 Billion dollars to iraq than we surely should not have a problem sending 82 billion to a third world country.

Oh no, not another do-gooder. The first thing we need to do, is do away with poverty right here at home. Places like the coal fiels of W.Va. and Kentuc. All over this United States we have children who go hungry and homeless day after day. Ask people like Winfry. She gives all hers away to some 3rd world country instead of feeding our kids here at home.

OK but you aint gonna like it.
We need to send in a SEAL team to assasinate all the heads of the corrupt nations that are intentionally not giving certain citizens food, like in Somalia.
As long as free industrialized countries have been sending food to these 3rd world countries, do you really think these countries just simply not have any food? They harbor the food for whatever political reasons they have.

I think we meaning Americans need to worry about poverty in our own country before we attempt to save the world from it. Never fails so many are concerned about what is going on in other countries but no one seems to care what is going on with our own citizens. We should put our country first so that we don't have poverty, homeless, and those without adequate medical care.

One thing we can all do is to buy fair trade certified items. You can buy fair trade coffee almost anywhere - even at Costco (Starbuck's House Blend, I believe), and you can also buy a lot of gift-y things, like jewelry and art pieces, from fair trade stores like Ten Thousand Villages.
Fair Trade is a movement that ensures a good working relationship between the producer and the distributer, where poor producers receive a just wage for their work and are treated with dignity and respect. Because the government is bypassed, you don't have to worry about corrupt officials taking all of the money for themselves.
Other than that, I think it's just really important to be aware of what's going on in the rest of the world, and to make sure we take care of our earth and fellow human beings. Donating what you can to charity never hurts, either.

Continue to bomb them until no one is left, or continue to buy more clothes that kids make for 7cents an hour in sweatshops....... Oh wait, no thats how we helped get them into poverty.... By industrializing third world countries they lose their means to survive off the Earth at some point...... I guess then we should continue to bomb them until no one is left.....
Who wants to go to the Gap? Abercrombie? Disney stores? How about Ikea? Support your sweatshops, by from some of these retailers.

First we must realize the context of the illusion, in which we are living in. World circumstances are manipulated by those in control of the resources. Education and knowledge are the only things , in which a freely determined person can thrive

It is very simple....
When rich start to become less selfish.
When rich start considering poor as human and there is both direction traffic flow of goods, service and labour.
When rich stop wasting money on stupid things like "War, Mission on Mar, Space, building hospital for cat and dogs"
More over if rich become more "HUMANE"
