There's a series of decisions to be made - If you are not intoxicated or wanted you will be free to go. If you ask for a ride you may or may not be given one depending on the department's policy - but if they give you a ride they will search you first to determine that you are not armed; so if you are holding the stash you really don't want a ride. In the best circumstances - you're not wanted, no one pissed off the cops, you have a valid license and the car actually belongs to one of you and is properly registered and insured - they may let you drive it away instead of towing it.
The big problem with cops giving people 'a ride' somewhere is that they could at any moment be dispatched to a hot call, and if you're in the back seat they can't respond. Also, as long as you are in their car their department is responsible for any injury that might happen to you as a result of an accident.

Had you been in the car the police would have ran a check for warrants on you and searched you and the car while waiting for a reply from the query of their computer. If you come back clean ie, No Warrants, and the car is clean, No Dope, or contraband, the police would probably have done 1 of 2 things; 1; tell you to leave because your friend is going to jail, or 2; If you have a clean license, the car is clean, they could release the car to you and let you drive away. It's his tickets not yours so unless your dirty (got drugs, or pipes or something they should let you go.

Can vary with departments. Last time I arrested a driver and impounded his car I transported the passenger to the station, processed my prisoner, and then drove the passenger to his home.

It may vary from one location to another. They should not leave you in jeopardy; however, they may have protocol to follow that would be inconvenient to you. Telephone the precinct or department appropriate in your area and simply ask them your question. They will probably tell you that you would have been brought to the station and allowed use of the telephone to arrange transportation from there...or...they may have taken you to work or home as a courtesy...or...they may have taken you to the nearest public facility and provided for you to contact someone to pick you up or a taxi cab.
Seems like there should be some legislative protocol on this topic...however, it would probably remain up to the soverign county to determine what is appropriate in a given situation.

If you were sober and a licensed driver you would have been able to drive your friends car home...and saved the big impound bucks.

They left me where my friend got pulled over and arrested.
I had to walk to my job, use the phone and wait for someone to pick me up.
