It's the idea that sin is some sort of substance or trait that's passed down from generation to generation, instead of just people judging other people.

When Adam and Eve were in the garden, God commanded them to not eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge... they did anyway... Yeah, there was a lot of blame thrown around also, but the point is that they disobeyed God.
Some believe that sin, the original (first) sin is everyone's problem... Because of what they did way back when, all mankind is held responsible for it.
Personally, I don't really get how I can be responsible for something that happened way Way WAY before I was even born.

It's a christian doctrine...it's rather silly! Anyways, ever since Adam and Eve sinned, people have now been responsible for that...even if they didn't take part in the sin! Christians believe that people are born into sin and that's why it's called original sin...because of Adam and Eve! It's really a silly belief if I say so myself!

There is no way you can read and understand Revelation
unless you are very familiar with the entire Bible.
Re original sin: I'm going to try shorten this down. God made man--then God made woman out of man's rib. (not so she would be beneath him but so she would be beside him).
Anyhow after they were both made, they got to live in the
most beautiful place anyone had ever seen and made just
for the two of them. Then they both got to name all the animal (that were alive at that time.)
The Lord God gave Adam a commandment and said,
you can eat of every tree in this land, but the one tree
that is in the midst (middle) of this land do not eat!.. He
did not tell them why, He just assumed they would obey.
Now this gets very deep theologically. The devil had been
cast out of heaven eons before and was just waiting for
the opportunity to kill the humans that God had made in His likeness--and to destroy all that God had made in the Garden. So he took upon himself the form of a serpent.
( It is speculated that serpents were beautiful creatures before "the Fall".) The devil is so extremely sly and can talk
anyone into anything, so he said "Did God really say?"
Putting doubt in her mind. then,He said,"God does not
want you to eat the fruit of the tree of "knowledge of good and evil" (key words). because as soon as you eat you will be "like God" knowing good from evil.
We know that Eve ate the fruit....but we also know that Adam watched her do it. It wasn't the fact that Eve disobeyed God so much but what she DID DO was then
know ' good from evil' You see, she had never known what
evil was and now she had the full force of it hit her in the
head. Because the first 2 humans could not even believe
what God had said, they committed the first sin on earth.
Deliberately disobeying what God had told them for their
health and well being. Because of this, they could no longer
stay in the holy and sinless place. They were expelled
from the Garden, the serpent was dealt with because that's
when the Lord God determined that he would send his
Son to die for sin. Two angels were put at the gates of
Eden and noone has ever found it since. Original sin is
disobeying the first commandment God ever made.
Many theologians believe that the devil controlled this earth
before God made humans and gave the earth to them,
thereby infuriating and disposessing the devil.

This is a difficult point and many systems have been invented to explain it: it will suffice to give the theological explanation now commonly received. Original sin is the privation (an act or instance of depriving) of sanctifying grace in consequence of the sin of Adam.

Original sin referes to when Adam and Eve ate the apple. Some christian sects say that because of what Adam and Eve did, we are all born with sin. So basically, we are born with the sin of Adam on our shoulders.
This makes no sense to me. First, we are all responsible for our own actions. Yes, they did commit sin, but without it, we wouldn't be here. Adam and Eve would still be in the Garden hanging out. Without what they did, there would be no agency for any of us. We wouldn't even exist.
Second, God forgave them of their sin before they even left the garden. They made commitments to God, and in so doing, the sin was forgiven. They still had to learn and since they knew the difference between good and evil, they couldn't stay in the Garden. They needed those experiences to try them and test them, to prove who they really were.
Third, Christ atoned for all our sins, including Adams. In so doing, he erased Adam's sin for good. He is no longer held to that sin. To me, it just makes sense that we aren't held to anyones sin but our own. We aren't held to the sins that someone else commited. God looks at us for who we are, not what our parents or anyone else has done. We weren't there when Adam and Eve ate the fruit, we don't know everything that happened. We can't answer to those sins because we didn't commit them.

Catholics coined the term "Original Sin".
They noted correctly that because of Adam's first sin (the "original one") that we are all dying. This part is true enough. God had given Adam dominion over all living things before he sinned. Then, he committed, not just any sin, but the sin of wanting to be lord over his own life. Since we have free will, he got what he wanted, and since he didn't have the power to sustain his own life, he began to die.
Since we came from a dying creature who couldn't sustain his own life, we are dying too. So, the Catholics reasoned that we are suffering from his original sin. But, they took it one step further and said that we are all born headed for hell. In fact, they used to teach that if a baby wasn't baptized and died, that it could not go to heaven. So they made up a place called "Limbo" where they insisted such babies went.
Both terms "limbo" and "oringinal sin" are not in the bible.
In fact, the bible says that "where the law is not given, sin in not impuned (punished)". Meaning, if a baby never reached what the Jews call "the age of reason", and did not decide like Adam to remain lord over his own life, that baby will not be punished for it.
He would go to heaven. In fact, there is one story in the bible where David's infant son dies, and David refers to the fact that he will see him again in heaven.
The Jews considered the average age of reason to be 12. Until then, a young boy could not read the scriptures for himself in the temple. At 12, he would have his Bar Mitzpha, a ceremony showing he had come of age, where he would sit in the temple and read a verse in the scrolls for the first time, to the elders. (Note that Jesus was 12 when He was temporarily lost by Mary and Joseph, and then found in the temple reading and discussing the scriptures with the elders.)
Some adults never reach the age of reason either, because of mental disabilities. They too, would go to heaven. God is a loving god, not a task master like one of the other writers on this page suggests.
Thankfully, the Catholics no longer teach that babies don't go to heaven.

Original sin is the first sin commited, when Adam and Eve ate the fruit that God had told them not to. They were then cast out of the garden of Eden and all their children were sinners without much forgivness until Jesus Christ came.

Having the instruction from God not to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, Adam and Eve did it anyway.
I full knowledge of the command, they rebelled against God and did what He said would produce death in them.
In 1 Timothy, Paul says that Adam was not deceived, but Eve was deceived. In other words, Adam knew what he was doing was wrong, and did it anyway. Eve accepted the logic and deceit of Satan.
We receive responsibility for our ourginal sin in two ways; both fatal. First by inheritance, Adam and Eve were our original arents. Then, because Adam and eve were our Federal heads, they acted as the heads of the family, and we are responsible for what they did.
Read about it in Genesis 3

The story of Adam and Eve is only a parable. The God of love and justice cannot unjustly condemns any man for the sins of his ancestors. Each man is responsible only for his own sins from his disobedience to the law of the One True God. All those sins may be forgiven when he repents, i.e. when he turns to obedience.
