Suppose you eat 6 oz of the richest, most decadent chocolate mousse in the world. Can you gain more than 6 oz of weight as a result? Why or why not?

The law of conservation of mass would say that it is impossible to gain any more mass than what you eat, at least in a closed system. It doesn't matter how much your body processes food, it cannot generate more mass (weight) from that food than what is in that food. However, theoretically it might be possible to gain 2 pounds from that 6 oz of mousse if somehow it changed the way the rest of your food was processed, say if it caused your body to metabolize other food differently.

But I'm betting it doesn't work that way. Still, I don't know what really happens.

(Yes I am trying to justify something I did, and actually it was closer to 8 or 10 oz.)

So are you trying to tell me that fatty foods cause more water to be retained in muscles? So you don't gain any fat beyond what you eat, just water?

You should read the "South Beach Diet" by Dr. Arthur Agatston. Even if you are not trying to lose weight, he explains very clearly how many of the foods you eat cause your insulin system to kick in thus storing nutrients in different ways. The book is really pretty interesting reading and if you want it just for the medical take on weight gain and loss and not for the meal plans and all of that, then you are reading less than 100 pages and it offers a lot of insight.

no that is impossible unless you eat pure fat right out of your body.......which is nasty by the way...........im a doctor and i can tell you its impossible. the reason is because everything you eat is seperated and sent around your body. many different ingredients go to different body parts and the waste or non useful parts of the food is what you urinate and is in your feces (in my kids words poop.............) the law of conservation of mass only applies to a closed system and our body is not a closed system since what leaves our body goes down the toilet and not back into our body
