Need to hear if allowing prisoners to fight in the war in Iraq instead of drafting our young men and women and forcing them to fight. After a pre-dertimined time fighting they would be allowed to return to USA as pardoned individuals.

Well from someone who is in the military I would not want to fight next to someone who shot their mother and is now forced to fight in a foreign war for their country that convicted them.....

There is no way to say this nicely; the worst thing you can have in any unit is someone you cannot trust. The worst would be a thief; one sure way to kill morale in a company is to have a thief on the loose. In fact, the military does not accept any one who is a known felon.

While we are on the subject, as a Gunny, I would have preferred to have all volunteers; I wanted people who wanted to be "there", where ever "there" was. I love the concept of an All-Volunteer military. We don't need a draft unless there is a large foreign military presence, and I mean large, not 20 or 30 people, but thousands foreign soldiers on soil. The Marine Corps briefly drafted during the Vietnam War, and the Sec Def Robert McNamara allowed 100,000 or so men into the military who failed to pass the exam to get in the service, the were known as McNamara's 100,000. They were career Privates, and that program was a disaster. I had men on some of my tanks in the early 1970s who could not read the Tank Maintenance Manual, AKA "The Tankers Bible", this thing weighed about five pounds and identified the locations of over 96 grease certs, the preventative maintenanxce schedule to keep the M-48A3 and the M-60 tank churning away.

Lets just keep the military an "All-Volunteer" force and leave the "Cons" in the prisons where they belong. If he's an Ex-Con OK, he's paid his debt to society, but not one serving his sentance.

Ummm, I don't know if I would want convicted felons having access to the weapons the military uses. I would say yes if you use them as bait.......good luck.

Because you committed a felony -- the answer is NO -- no government service will EVER trust a felon with the Responsibility for government Resources.

They used to do it. I was in a combat infantry unit in Vietnam as a pointman. My slackman (the guy RIGHT behind me) was arrested for felony battery (beating a guy nearly to death). My machinegunner was arrested for killing a guy in a barfight (punched him in the face with a beermug and put the handle through his temple) and our unit sniper was arrested for attempted murder (shot his girlfriend and her "new" boyfriend in his apartment when he came home from work early). All of them were given a choice, go in the Army or go to prison. The choice was obvious!! I trusted the HELL out of them and we killed LOTS of people who were trying to kill us. Oh yeah. I was drafted in the first lottery (so I'm REAL old). If they lived their arrest record for the felony was changed to detention and no felony conviction was shown.

For those of you who think I went on to be a crook, I'm a retired (30 year) police sergeant. I didn't want to go to Vietnam. And my friends? All went on to live a full life (so far) with no other negative law enforcement contacts.

Moral Character. Cons lack it.

many of the men and women that are in jail are there for socioeconomic differences that have influenced life decisions or the reasons why they might be in jail. Its very similar to sending black men to fight the losing battles in past wars, for example the civil war when slaves were offered freedom if they faught in the war. Due to the social injustice in this country I think it would be absolutely wrong.

In theory sounds like a good idea but in reality, they are criminals and do you really think that they will do the right thing??? Especially when given weapons, I doubt it.

No cons...they were dumb enough to get caught and you want to give them arms training..we need the draft. It is the only way to stop the war..
